Sony Alpha SLT-A77

Sony is a relative newcomer to SLR cameras, but we can't fault it for ambition, or for innovation. It may only have an APS-C sensor, but in almost every other way it's a beast of a camera.

Sony Alpha SLT-A77 review

The Sony Alpha SLT-A77 has been a long time coming - the company's latest DSLR was announced in August, but production delays have kept it from being widely available even now. Many people have waited eagerly for it, though, and with good reason: the 24.3-megapixel APS-C sensor (the same one that...
Pros:
  • Excellent image and video quality
  • Ridiculously fast
  • Fantastic kit lens
  • Built-in GPS
  • Superior Live View and autofocus performance
Cons:
  • Inferior low-light performance
  • Lens ecosystem lags Canon and Nikon
  • EVF isn't as good as an OVF
  • Mediocre battery life

When we reviewed the original SLT, the SLT-A55, at the tail end of 2010 , we were impressed by how well thought-out its operational ergonomics were, given the newness of its key technology.
Pros:
  • Excellent 2.4 million-dot OLED EVF
  • Versatile full-time live view system
  • Very high-resolution 24MP CMOS sensor (but see caveats in 'cons'
  • below
  • Exceptionally 'deep' feature set including Auto HDR and Sweep Panorama
  • Class-leading video resolution
  • Solid
  • well thought-out ergonomics
  • Fast and...
Cons:
  • In-camera JPEGs don't show off the 24MP sensor to its best extent
  • Comparatively strong noise reduction at medium and high ISO settings
  • Very noisy raw files at high ISO settings
  • Little control over high ISO noise reduction in JPEG mode ('auto' or 'weak'
  • Limited control in 12 fps continuous...

First off let me say that I have been with Olympus since the beginning starting with the E500 and currently use the E5. I have never owned another DSLR other than Olympus. On a whim I purchased a Sony Nex 3 because I was so intrigued with it.
Pros:
  • Easy navigation, fast focus, tilting LCD, awesome EVF with level, tons of lens choices, superior IQ with low noise levels, build quality, ability to change focus modes quickly
  • I could go on and on with this
Cons:
  • None
  • time will tell

Sony Alpha A77 review

Review units for Sony's long-anticipated replacement for the Alpha A700 , the Sony Alpha A77, have finally made it to UK shores, although the worst flood disaster to strike Thailand for 50 years has hampered the camera's official release into the market.

Sony Alpha A77V

I'll lead off by saying that I enjoyed shooting with the Sony Alpha SLT-A77V more than any camera since the Nikon D7000 . It's heavy, especially with the 16-50mm kit lens (which, by the way, has become my favorite Sony lens), but the grip is comfy, it feels well balanced, and with only a few...
Pros:
  • A well-designed camera that's enjoyable to shoot
  • partly thanks to a great viewfinder
  • the fixed-mirror Sony Alpha SLT-A77V bests the competition with features like a cleverly articulated display
  • built-in GPS for geotagging
  • and very good 1080/60p video
Cons:
  • There are some annoying omissions in the A77V's feature set
  • including odd limitations for raw and video shooting
  • plus battery life is subpar

That said, when weighing these up against a superb level of image quality when shooting in most conditions, great handling, good build quality, industry-leading EVF, quick full-time phase detection AF system and a comprehensive set of exposure modes, we have little trouble with recommending this
