Sony NEX-7

UPDATE: 02/11/2011: with our initial test model we measured a battery life of just 230 photos (RAW + JPeg). However, we've now tested a second NEX-7 which had a much better battery life of 340 photos.
Pros:
  • Incredibly sharp
  • precise electronic viewfinder
  • Good general responsiveness / Built-in flash
  • Nice design and handling / Customisable interface
  • Noise handled very well up to 6400 ISO
  • Good 1080 HD video mode
Cons:
  • No built-in mechanical stabilisation
  • You'll need a top-notch lens to make the most of those 24 Megapixels
  • Coninuous shooting with AF a bit slow (3.5 fps
  • Can't take a still photo while filming video / Noisy shutter
  • Proprietary accessories hot-shoe / Still not many lenses available

Great alternative to DSLR

This camera is awesome, at first I was doubtful selling my Nikon D90 but now that I have been shooting with it I have no regrets. It has hardly any shutter lag and the pictures I have taken are sharp with a lot of detail(although this will depend on your lens).
Pros:
  • Picture & Video Quality
Cons:
  • Maybe Battery life
  • but it is not too bad.

I remember when the NEX series first came out and everyone was commenting on what an ugly camera it was and now it's a very popular series. I liked the looks of it then and now as well. The grip is a huge advantage and makes the camera very easy to hold.
Pros:
  • Great IQ, low noise at high ISOs, better build quality
  • Beautiful EVF
  • Thumb wheels for manual shooting
  • Sony hot shoe for Sony flashes, tilting screen, button lay out for easy shooting, faster auto focus and those nice Sony warm colors
Cons:
  • low battery life, no touch screen, no off camera flash mode and complicated menu, Also I wish it had a built in ND grad
  • It seems to me that would be an easy firmware addition

Nex 7: lovely, but the sensor overheats too early!

It's now a week I am taking pictures with my new Nex 7. A lovely camera. However I read in a forum today that somebody experienced a overheating sensor. So I tried to make a movie: when the camera was cold an icon appeared warning that the sensor was overheating after about 15 minutes.

Best ILC on the Market!

This camera is listed as a DSLR in the product title - this is false. This is not a single lens reflex camera; the camera is an ILC (see pros), with an APS-C sensor (same sensor found on mid-range DSLRs). The viewfinder is electronic.
Pros:
  • 24.3 MP ILC - interchangeable lens camera APS-C sensor Compact form factor Viewfinder Decent battery life
Cons:
  • There's some loss of image clarity in very low light situations that I've noticed does not occur with my friend's D7000
  • but other than that I've found no real cons

Sony NEX-7 camera

In May, 2012 I received the Sony NEX-7 camera as a graduation gift. I absolutely love it! The frame is slightly bigger than the NEX-5 but the features more than make up for it. The quality of the images are amazing, the auto shoot mode works well for many situations and the manual options allow any...

Sony NEX-7 review

In an opinion article last week , I stated that I didn't believe that compact system cameras would replace digital SLRs for serious photography, so with the inescapable power of Murphy's law, this week I find myself reviewing a CSC which could very well do just that.
Pros:
  • Design
  • Control system
  • Image quality
  • Performance
  • Proving me wrong about CSCs
Cons:
  • Price
