Sony NEX-7 review

When Sony bought Konica Minolta's camera division in 2006, there was much speculation about the impact the acquisition would have on the DSLR market. On one hand, Sony is a large technology company and a leader in many fields, including broadcast video, and therefore had the investing power and...

Sony NEX-7

Compact system cameras (CSC) have developed over the years and are now as much a part of the photographic tapestry as their DSLR cousins. It was only a matter of time before a high-end model would hit the shelves, and it's Sony's NEX-7 that takes that title.
Pros:
  • Great OLED viewfinder
  • decent image quality at high resolution
Cons:
  • Low-light focusing is poor
  • some layout issues
  • need more pro lenses in range

Sony NEX-7 Review

There's long been talk of a high-end Compact System Camera (CSC) to attract a more demanding user base to the ‘miniaturised' market sector. Following the release of the flagship Alpha SLT-A77 translucent mirror model earlier this year (which, by the way, we thought was a roaring success) Sony's...

Sony NEX-7

UPDATE: 02/11/2011: with our initial test model we measured a battery life of just 230 photos (RAW + JPeg). However, we've now tested a second NEX-7 which had a much better battery life of 340 photos.
Pros:
  • Incredibly sharp
  • precise electronic viewfinder
  • Good general responsiveness / Built-in flash
  • Nice design and handling / Customisable interface
  • Noise handled very well up to 6400 ISO
  • Good 1080 HD video mode
Cons:
  • No built-in mechanical stabilisation
  • You'll need a top-notch lens to make the most of those 24 Megapixels
  • Coninuous shooting with AF a bit slow (3.5 fps
  • Can't take a still photo while filming video / Noisy shutter
  • Proprietary accessories hot-shoe / Still not many lenses available

Sony NEX-7 digital camera review

A full weekend with one of the most anticipated cameras of the year? Well, duh. In case you aren't up to speed, the upcoming Sony NEX-7 is a high-end mirrorless compact digital camera with a whopping 24 megapixel (!!) sensor that puts it right up there in DSLR territory.
Pros:
  • Output from the 24 MP sensor is terrific
  • High ISO shots are very usable, AF generally fast, shutter lag is practically nonexistent, Form factor, TriNavi knobs and overall build quality are topnotch, Video quality is excellent
  • I like the autofocus and dedicated video record button
Cons:
  • Accessing some functions / modes requires a bit of button pushing and menu digging
  • EVF is very usable … but I still preferred using the LCD
  • Not as many lens and accessory choices as an SLR system
  • Light weight becomes a disadvantage when shooting handheld video

Sony Alpha NEX-7

Sony has taken the 23.5 x 15.6 mm 24.3-megapixel Exmor sensor it used in the Alpha SLT-A77 and installed it in a compact camera body to produce the NEX 7. It has also built a high-resolution, 1.3 cm XGA OLED electronic viewfinder into the new camera body, along with a proprietary hot shoe that...
Pros:
  • You require a compact but sophisticated
  • large-sensor interchangeable-lens camera with PASM shooting modes plus support for raw file capture and Full HD video recording
  • You want an optical viewfinder and built-in flash
  • You require quicker access to key camera settings than most mirrorless cameras
Cons:
  • You require a pocketable camera (it's only pocketable without a lens)
  • You're a point-and-press snapshooter
