Sony NEX-7 review
The NEX7's design is an interesting mix: we're keen on the variety of controls, yet the ongoing lack of a mode dial and awkward placement of some controls does let the overall design down.

Sony NEX-7 review
In the middle ground between DSLRs and point-and-shoot lies a vast plain filled with all manner of tweener cameras, in all variants of shape, size, price, and quality. Until now, no one has nailed the whole package, but so far the smartest middle ground - smaller body and price, but without losing...
Pros:
- Excellent pictures and video
- Fast performance
- Very easy to use
Cons:
- Still doesn't have DSLR-level manual control
- OLED viewfinder is mediocre
- Lens ecosystem isn't as good as Nikon or Canon

Sony Alpha NEX-7
Sony has taken the 23.5 x 15.6 mm 24.3-megapixel Exmor sensor it used in the Alpha SLT-A77 and installed it in a compact camera body to produce the NEX 7. It has also built a high-resolution, 1.3 cm XGA OLED electronic viewfinder into the new camera body, along with a proprietary hot shoe that...
Pros:
- You require a compact but sophisticated
- large-sensor interchangeable-lens camera with PASM shooting modes plus support for raw file capture and Full HD video recording
- You want an optical viewfinder and built-in flash
- You require quicker access to key camera settings than most mirrorless cameras
Cons:
- You require a pocketable camera (it's only pocketable without a lens)
- You're a point-and-press snapshooter

Sony Alpha NEX-7 Review: A Top-Notch Mirrorless Camera
When we first encountered the Sony Alpha NEX-7 , DCR editor Allison Johnson was putting a pre-production model through its paces under the auspices of Sony San Diego this past September. Allison gave the camera high grades and was particularly impressed with the performance of the viewfinder.

- Good video quality
- Good shutter lag and AF acquisition time
- Excellent viewfinder
Cons:
- Cost
- Awkward playback regimen
- Monitor/viewfinder interface can impact battery life

Despite the occasional shortfall, the NEX-7 is a very pleasant camera to use, especially when you've customised it to your particular way of shooting. The built-in OLED viewfinder is a real bonus, providing a bright, clear view, and having a hotshoe and input for an external microphone both add to...

Sony NEX-7 review
The NEX-7 ticks some very big boxes. It's got the electronic viewfinder department wrapped up and tied off with a big bow, the movie mode is great and the 10fps burst mode is an attractive option.
Pros:
- Great OLED viewfinder
- decent image quality at high resolution
Cons:
- Low-light focusing is poor
- some layout issues
- need more pro lenses in range

The Sony NEX-7 has an interesting lineage: it's the top model in the second generation of Sony's NEX interchangeable lens camera system, a group of cameras focused on good image quality without the bulky controls and steep learning curve of a digital SLR .

Sony's newest NEX camera is technically brilliant, but its controls and menus need some refinement

When the NEX-7 was first announced, it looked as though Sony had gathered together a set of enthusiasts' wish lists and built a camera to exceed them all. From the compact 'rangefinder style' body with its built-in electronic viewfinder, through the high resolution sensor offering 24MP stills and...
