Sonos Playbase

I was looking for a CD changer to play old CD's. An Abt audio consultant suggested a Sonos Playbase. We bought a new Sony LED TV at the same time, replacing a 14-year-old Sharp. I really enjoy being able to manage my music from my laptop or smartphone.

Sonos PlayBase review

The PlayBase is very close to being a brilliant TV speaker solution, but it falls just short. It’s undeniably a huge upgrade over the sound produced by any TV, offering width, scale, dynamism and excitement that will blow your mind if that’s what you’re used to. Even compared to the vast majority of other soundbars and bases the Sonos is in most ways streets ahead, and that’s before you consider all of the regular Sonos features this has and which rivals do not. But there’s a fly in the ointment, and that fly is treble that’s sharp and harsh enough to distract and detract from the other things that the PlayBase does so well. In a battle between the PlayBase and the PlayBar, it’s the PlayBar that I’d take. Yes, it has its own flaws - it isn’t as full-bodied, punchy or dynamic as the PlayBase - but its treble is far better controlled and that goes a good way to making up for its other flaws. But, as mentioned, the PlayBar doesn’t work very well unless you’re wall-mounting. If you’re not and you’re a Sonos fan looking for a speaker you can plonk your telly on, there’s still loads to like with the PlayBase - and remember, that generous returns policy means you can always try one out for yourself. Buy the PlayBase here from Sonos

Amazingly big, wide sound for a box this compact; Natural, punchy bass; Does all of the great things any other Sonos speaker can; Can be upgraded to a full 5.1 system;

Treble is harsh, often annoyingly so; Optical-only isn't very flexible - or even necessarily that simple; Won't work perfectly in every room;

Sonos Playbase Review

Sonos isn't a stranger to soundbars, but we've been waiting quite a while for a follow-up to 2013's Playbar ($748.00 at Amazon) . Switching gears a bit, the new Playbase is a sound slab designed to be placed under your TV. This $699.99 speaker system is a bit pricey considering it doesn't include a subwoofer, but its size allows for fuller audio than most soundbars, and it does a great job with movies, TV shows, and music alike. It can also integrate easily with other Sonos speakers throughout your home, and you can even set up a full 5.1-channel surround system if you're willing to spend an extra $1,100 for the additional satellites and subwoofer. Design Most sound slabs are designed to completely disappear under a TV, becoming nothing more than a blocky stand of sorts. The Playbase is similarly simple and understated, but it has enough visual flourishes that make it unmistakably a Sonos product, and one that won't totally fade into the background. The speaker is a large, curved ...

The Playbase is a powerful audio slab for your TV, with lots of streaming options and the ability to connect to other Sonos speakers throughout your home.

Excellent overall audio performance; Large sound field with very good directional imaging for movies; Lots of streaming media options through the Sonos app; Can be expanded to a true 5.1-channel surround system

Lacks ultra-low frequency, subwoofer-like presence; Can only use other Sonos speakers for 5.1 setup; No Bluetooth

Amazing sound.

Sonos has made a greater difference as I listen the tv now .It makes hearing the dialogues more distinctly even at a very lower volume. love this product as it does not overshadow the lyrics with loud sound . Moreover, when you are watching tv at night and enjoy the perfect pitch it does not disturb other family members in other rooms.

Sonos Playbase review: Sonos Playbase hits a home run

When we heard Sonos was making a sound base, we knew the company was taking a hell of a risk. That's because many of today's TVs simply won't fit on top of them.

The Playbase adds excellent home theater and music sound to Sonos' superb multiroom music system. Just make sure your TV fits.

The Sonos Playbase is a low-slung sound base with impeccable design and impressive sound. Its bass is even better than the Playbar's, so there's no need for a sub. Sonos' app and other speakers make it part of one of the best multiroom systems available.

The wide effect needs breathing room -- unadorned walls, too, if you please. No DTS support, HDMI ports or Bluetooth. If you have a "clawfoot" TV, it may not fit on top.
