Yes, this lens is worth $1,000. Here's why.

My reaction to every fast lens Sigma release seems to be "I can't believe something this good costs less than $1,000." A new favorite -- the 50mm f1.4 DG HSM -- joins Sigma's Art series of lenses, which already includes two of my all-time sub-$1K favorites, the 35mm f1.4 and 18-35mm f1.8 .
Pros:
  • The Sigma 50mm f1.4 lens is a well-designed lens that performs very well for its price
Cons:
  • It would be nice if it had image stabilization

Met my expectations and more!!

I'm a wedding photographer, so fast primes are a must for me, especially during indoor ceremonies/receptions, and the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 ART lens for Sony did not disappoint! Physically, the lens has a clean, simple, and beautiful build.

The pictures below illustrate the angles of view on 35mm full frame and APS-C (1.6x crop) camera bodies. Our observations indicate that the focal length is noticeably shorter than the specified 50mm (probably closer to 47mm):
Pros:
  • Class-leading image quality
  • Relatively low vignetting even at wide apertures on full frame
  • Reasonably fast and positive autofocus
  • with full-time manual override
  • Very good build quality
Cons:
  • Large and heavy for a 50mm F1.4
  • Expensive

Well, it took two tries to get a properly operating one. The first had serious issues; If I micro adjusted for shooting in the portrait range, it was way out at about 30 feet. If I micro adjusted for 30 feet, it was way out in portrait range.
Pros:
  • Dreamy bokeh
  • sharp right from wide open
Cons:
  • AF issues
