This is my most used lens. A good alternative for obsolete Nikkor AF28/1.4 or MF35/1.4, nice close-up focusing and good colors, not too prone to flare. Try to test one before buying, older copies tend to focus wrong on new bodies. Well balanced ergonomics when mounted on D300/D700/D3.
Pros:
  • Resolution
  • even at f/1.8 excellent results! sturdy
  • not too big
  • resonable distortion
Cons:
  • MF-switch
  • feels a bit loose when shaken
  • AF-problems
  • light falloff

Bonne optique mais lent avec vignetage important

Première impression: l'objectif est imposant mais de bonne finition. La mise au point est lente et bruyante. Nous sommes très loin de l'USM. Mon objectif n'a aucun problème de back ou front focus. Ouf... Il faut fermer à f4 pour que le vignetage disparaisse presque complètement.

Think of it as manual focus

I have been unable to find another 28mm lens with this kind of aperture. Sadly, the Sigma cannot autofocus well in moderate-to-low light.
Pros:
  • Fast
  • Wide
Cons:
  • Won't focus in low light

Simply wonderful

I am well aware that third party lenses can be hit and miss sometimes, Sigma in particular seem to have certain issues with canon compatibility on occasion.I've been lucky enough to have only had excellent copies of their lenses and although many people rave about Canons L glass, I try not to be a
Pros:
  • Consistent Output
  • Rugged
  • Sharp Focus
  • Strong Construction

The minimal focusing distance is awesome !

Lovely fast FX lens. Great minimum focus distance. I had been using my 90mm macro on my Nikon D800 for some time but this lens brings a totally new perspective to my macro shots. Great for kids and pets , though adults might not prefer portraits with such a wide angle lens.

I have this lens for the Canon body. Focus is not fast, but very usable. The optics is lacking when compared to any 50mm prime Canon offers. In other words, it's sharp, but not that great. It's okay for the price if you need a wider range. It's macro, but you can't focus that close.
Pros:
  • Light weight
  • cheap
  • big focus ring
  • prime lens
Cons:
  • Build quality

Check your copy to see if it's in good condition

I received a bad copy, and I suspect the lens elements are misaligned inside. After taking few photos to the night sky, I noticed that the bokeh is weird looking starting from about mid-frame. I tested it with F/2.0 and F/2.8, both using Canon 6D, ISO 1600, 30sec exposure on a tracking mount.
