Great low light lens at a reasonable cost.
I am an enthusiast who enjoys taking pictures of the family. I did some research on a low light lens and found great reviews on this lens. The Nikon version is out of my price point so it was either Tamron or Sigma. I have not been disappointed with my choice.
Pros:
- great focal range/good for low light or no flash photography
Cons:
- the autofocus motor is a little loud
- but not an issue for me

Value for money.
This is a great lens for the price. The focus ring is very sensitive, but that is the only downside.

As far as build quality is concerned, the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM is very sturdy, with a rigid zoom barrel that doesn't need much rotating to go through all the focal lengths.

Pleasing Results, Very Good Quality
Picked up one of these used on eBay. It's a crap shoot when you buy a used lens, especially a third party brand, but Sigma has a good reputation, and online reviews of this model are very decent. Price is steep for a third-party lens, but picture quality is very good, especially between 28 and 50mm.

Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM review by Lamar
I wanted a fast normal zoom to use with my D300. Based on the many reviews online it was easy to narrow my decision down to two choices, the Nikon 17-55 f/2.8 or the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8. I decided to get the Sigma since it was half the price of the Nikon and had VR.
Pros:
- Lighter, Less Expensive than the Nikon option
- Generally very good overall sharpness and excellent in the center.
Cons:
- Corner softness at f/4 or less when wide

For shooting video this is my go to lens. I use it for probably 80% of the stuff that I shoot. The Tamron equivalent is also optically nice but the build quality doesn't feel nearly as sturdy/smooth as the Sigma and as I'm shooting video on Canon bodies the fact that the Tamron is backwards is a big...
Pros:
- build
- image quality
- price
- stabilized
Cons:
- a bit heavy

Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM standard zoom lens
When it comes to DSLR image quality, pretty much all of us have heard the old truism about the quality of the lens being more important than the price of the camera. In this respect it pays to get off to the best possible start when buying your first DSLR, or when taking your first steps towards...

- Constant aperture of f/2.8
- Smooth zooming action
- Delivers excellent results
Cons:
- Manual focus ring is fiddly
- All-plastic outer construction
