One of this month's free games for PlayStation Plus subscribers is Rocket League, an exciting new combination of soccer and RC cars that's easy to learn but difficult to master. Rocket League feels like an old Tyco commercial meeting modern day gaming, and quite frankly it's awesome.

Excelling in sport means knowing when a moment is outside of your control and recognizing when an opportunity is there to seize. In Rocket League, both events occur countless times in any given match--not surprising for a game heavily inspired by soccer.

AI isn't great

Rocket League has finally hit Xbox One after it's PC and PS4 release last year. This version comes with platform-exclusive content in the form of Gears of War and Halo styled vehicles.

Play a few Rocket League matches and you see more than a few similarities between the game's RC-car action and pre-K level soccer. A mass of players follows the ball wherever it rolls, teammates steal from each other, and accidental own-goal shots are almost expected.

It's very rare these days to see an indie developer get the resources, platform and timing they need to make their game a success. We've seen some zeitgeist around titles like

The concept is easy to grasp: You have to use futuristic cars to knock a ball into a goal. You can jump into the air to hit the ball with your car, you can use a finite amount of boost to speed up, and there's a handbrake to allow for tighter turns. That's it.

A hallmark of excellence. It may have some flaws, but they are negligible to what is otherwise a supreme title.

A superb multiplayer game that takes a very simple premise and crafts from it one of the best competitive arcade games in years.
