Like the Nikon S8100 , the CX5 hides a huge lens in a small body. Behind the faintly boxy, 3cm-deep body lurks a lens that (converted to 35mm) runs from a wide-angle 28mm to a very long 300mm, with an aperture ranging from f/3.5 to 5.6. Impressive stuff.

Good picture quality and colouration.

Well designed and built with a good sensor. Slightly enhanced colour without flash which makes pics in poor light and dull days better than they actually are. All round a great little snapper for the money.

Ricoh CX5 Review

Ricoh's CX series of compacts have received several updates over the past few years, with each new model offering slight tweaks on performance without breaking a great deal of new ground. While it hasn't ever hampered the impressive performance and image quality, it has hardly set the world alight.
Pros:
  • Good image quality
  • excellent LCD screen
  • retro design
Cons:
  • Lack of manual mode
  • no Raw capture
  • high price tag relative to competing advanced compacts

Ricoh CX5

Aside from cosmetic modifications, nothing much has changed in Ricoh's CX series of slimline digicams since the CX3 was released early last year. The sensor is the same 10-megapizel back-illuminated CMOS chip and the camera has the same retracting 10.7x optical zoom lens.

Ricoh CX5

Ricoh is most definitely a niche camera brand, and it appeals to a particular sub-section of photographers. Class-leading features like quick autofocus and a bright screen don't always make up for the lack of other essential options like RAW capture and manual controls.
Pros:
  • Quick
  • effective AF
  • Excellent macro performance
  • Eye-Fi compatibility
  • Now has HDMI out
Cons:
  • No RAW
  • No manual controls
  • ISO performance over 200 needs work
  • Design flaws mean the camera slips out of hand easily
