Panasonic Lumix DMC-G7

The new Panasonic Lumix DMC-G7 camera replaces the two-year old G6 as the sixth generation model in its line and slots in just below the GH4 (which we reviewed in May 2014, with which it shares some important features although in a smaller and lighter body.

Overall, I had a very good experience with the Panasonic G7 camera. I really liked the fact that the G7 turns on instantly so you won't have to worry about missing a shot. Battery life is impressive as well.

+ Small and easy to use; + Fast Autofocus; + Impressive image and video quality; + Instant startup

Game changer: Panasonic's 4K-friendly G7 reviewed

Panasonic's latest take on the mirrorless camera not only show it has the guts to be a great camera, but a very creative and forward-thinking one, too.

Comfortable to hold; Loads of function buttons; 4K burst and pre-burst modes are literal game changers and perfect for sports or high-speed photography; Decent shots are possible from this camera; though we'd change that kit lens first; Support for wireless included

Eye-sensor can sometimes be a little fiddly; switching off the rear LCD when your eye isn't behind the viewfinder; No charging from the camera itself; and an external charger is still needed

Panasonic Lumix G7

I liked the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G7 a lot more than I expected. The G7 brings the company's midrange line of enthusiast and family-oriented interchangeable-lens models up to date with features like 4K/UHD (ultra high definition) video and the company's most recent autofocus and image-processing...

For the money; the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G7 delivers great photo and video; excellent performance and a broad feature set

It's another in a long line of Panasonic cameras with proprietary USB connectors and some people might find it too complicated

Panasonic Lumix DMC-G7

Conclusions The Panasonic Lumix DMC-G7 is one of the better mirrorless cameras you can buy. Even though it lacks the stellar build quality of the Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark II, its image quality is just a step behind APS-C models at high ISOs, and the Micro Four Thirds lens system is extensive.

4K video; Built-in EVF; Vari-angle touch LCD; Dual control dials; Speedy performance; 4K Photo and Post Focus modes; Built-in flash

Tracking focus slows burst rate; Not available as a body only; Plastic build

I started this review by stating that I believe the G7 is trying to be a non-specific ILC, rather than draw attention to its mirrorless nature. There are aspects to the user experience, such as the seamless viewfinder/ rear LCD operation (in combination with the use of rear screen to select AF...

Solid image quality in both Raw and JPEG; 4K (UHD) video; Built-in Wi-Fi with comprehensive set of features; 4K Photo mode with clever pre-burst option for grabbing stills from video; In-camera Raw conversion for post-shot re-processing; Super-fast focus for single AF acquisitions; Impressive...

Mechanical shutter causes some softness at around 1/100th exposures; Number of external controls make the camera seem more complex than it is; Dated Q.Menu is over-complex; Touchscreen control tabs leave the screen a bit cluttered (though they can be disabled; Wi-Fi can be overwhelming and...

Panasonic G7 review

While the G7's design and build may lack the excitement of cameras like the Fuji X-T10, it has a very well-rounded feature set, with a high-quality OLED viewfinder, a vari-angle touchscreen and Wi-Fi connectivity. Image quality is also high.

OLED viewfinder; Vari-angle touch-screen; Integration of 4K Photo shooting

Two-year-old sensor; Lightweight build; Micro Four Thirds type sensor is smaller than APS-C

Panasonic Lumix DMC-G7 Review

Equivalent to twice the resolution of full HD video, 4K video (3840×2160 pixels) is mightily impressive when it's viewed up against full HD video (1920×1080 pixels) and if you're yet to see the true benefit of 4K it's well worth walking into your local television store to see for yourself the...

+ 4K video and 4K Photo modes; + Electronic shutter enables silent operation; + Twin control dials for independent aperture and shutter speed control; + Superb 2,36-million-dot electronic viewfinder

Operational speed in 4K Photo modes needs to be faster; Top plate; dials and buttons have a plasticky feel; Low resolution previews via EVF in 4K burst photo mode
