OnePlus Nord 12+256GB Grey Onyx MP 04043 review

While the OnePlus Nord isn't a perfect phone, it scores very highly in all the key areas – camera, performance, battery life, design, screen, software experience – and it's just about our favourite phone right now if you want to maximise the bang you get for your buck.

Fluid; bright 6.44-inch display; Great camera for the price; OxygenOS continues to impress

No waterproofing; No wireless charging; No Wi-Fi 6 support

OnePlus Nord 12+256GB Grey Onyx MP 04043 review

This isn’t as good as the OnePlus 8 range, but it gets very close, and shows just how much phone you can still get for less than half what a top-end handset would cost.

Great camera setup; Smooth 90Hz screen; Brilliant value

No water resistance rating; No wireless charging; No telephoto camera

OnePlus Nord 12+256GB Grey Onyx MP 04043 review

OnePlus's return to budget-friendliness is one of the best-value 5G phones you can buy today.

5G without the 5G tax; 90Hz OLED screen; Solid low-light camera mode; Glass and metal design

Display could be brighter; No 4K/60fps rear camera video; No headphone jack

OnePlus Nord 12+256GB Grey Onyx MP 04043 review

OnePlus has made an emphatic return to the mid-range market with the OnePlus Nord – it's an affordable smartphone that's packed with features. There's a great screen, plenty of power, and a set of capable cameras, all wrapped up in a package that belies its affordable price.

Affordable with flagship qualities; Premium design; Plenty of camera features

Average battery life; Limited notifications space; No IP rating for water resistance

OnePlus Nord 12+256GB Grey Onyx MP 04043 review

The OnePlus Nord is a very good phone full stop – and an absolute bargain at only £379. It looks the part. The screen is great. The rear main camera is great and the battery life is very good.

OnePlus Nord 12+256GB Grey Onyx MP 04043 review

The OnePlus Nord is one of OnePlus' strongest launches ever, just because it offers so much for such a low price. Like the OnePlus 7 Pro launch last year, the Nord is one of those phones that is just so miles ahead of its Android competition, it will probably compare favorably to mid-range phones...

A 90Hz display, at this price range, is an absolutely killer feature; A flat, distortion-free display, just like every content, app, and website creator intended; A modern, slim bezel design that is indistinguishable from a flagship smartphone.

OnePlus doesn't do monthly security updates. It'll be more like every other month; No always-on display; Facebook crapware; Shipping six mediocre cameras instead of two good cameras.

OnePlus Nord 12+256GB Grey Onyx MP 04043 review

OnePlus Nord Software And User Experience We really like OnePlus’ take on Android 10. OxygenOS 10.5 (as it’s called) is quick, smooth, and always a pleasure to use. Most importantly, it’s almost stock.

Really nice 90Hz display; Good enough cameras w/ OIS; Excellent performance; Stock Android; Great value

Plastic mid-frame; really?; Not sold in the US; No wireless charging; No headphone jack

OnePlus Nord 12+256GB Grey Onyx MP 04043 review

OnePlus got started with affordable so-called “flagship killers” like the OnePlus One and OnePlus 3. But over the years, its phones have become more expensive (as have most phones, to be fair).

Build quality Plastic frame aside, this feels just like a OnePlus phone should — it’s well made and likely to be durable over time; Display Smooth 90Hz AMOLED panel with a good-enough 1080p resolution and decent brightness levels. It’s also flat, which means no accidental touches or tinted sides.

Design It’s not unattractive, but it’s certainly a step down from the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro — you just can’t beat those matte glass finishes and centered camera modules; Cameras (again) Sensor crop zoom is terrible past 2x.
