OnePlus 8 Pro Onyx Black 12+256GB MP 02376 review

From waterproofing to wireless charging, the OnePlus 8 Pro is a flagship through and through - and does more than enough to earn its top-end price

Review: OnePlus 8 Pro is an excellent phone, but dang, it's pricey

Of the two new flagship phones from Chinese phone-maker OnePlus, the OnePlus 8 Pro is the higher-end device. In addition to 5G, which both phones have, it has IP certification for water resistance, a total of four cameras -- one at 48 megapixels -- and a bigger, 120Hz display. Available starting April 22, it's also pricier at $899 (£799) for 128GB storage and $999 (£899) for 256GB. (Australian prices aren't yet available, but £799 converts to roughly AU$1,570.) The OnePlus 8 starts at $699 (£599).

The OnePlus 8 Pro has a 120Hz display and (finally!) wireless charging. But is it worth paying more, or should you go with the OnePlus 8?

Reverse and wireless charging; Water-resistant; 120Hz display;

Pricey; Color-filter camera isn't useful;

OnePlus 8 Pro review

OnePlus’s first attempt at a fully featured flagship presses all the right buttons, and there really isn’t anything missing here. The lack of a fancy telephoto camera might disappoint some, but 30W wireless charging and an IP68 rating are welcome OnePlus firsts. The OnePlus 8 Pro may not be perfect, but there’s something here for everyone, and little that’s lacking. You’ll have to look elsewhere if you like your phones compact, but otherwise right now this is the best phone you can buy at this price - and still better than several that cost more.

OnePlus 8 Pro Onyx Black 12+256GB MP 02376 review

But taken as a package, we can’t think of a flagship Android phone that covers as many bases as the OnePlus 8 Pro. It’s a major contender for the best flagship phone on the market.

Smooth and sharp 120Hz QHD display; Speedy all round; Great camera

Large and unwieldy; Curved display poses problems; Battery life just OK

OnePlus 8 Pro Onyx Black 12+256GB MP 02376 review

The OnePlus 8 Pro has some big shoes to fill, following-up on the success of last year's 7 Pro. At $230 more, though, it's hard to call it a successor — the days of flagship "killing" are done now that OnePlus phones can cost over $900.

Screen Super smooth, bright, and high resolution; Performance This phone screams; Camera Detail improvements, can take great photos sometimes; Software OxygenOS remains one of the best Android skins; Speakers Actually sound quite good (for phone speakers).

Curved edges "Waterfall" curved screens bother some people. They make it easier to hold, but accidental touches are a problem, and there is off-angle color shift and glare; Size A curved screen helps, but this is a bigger phone, and you can't just choose based on size — the smaller model is missing...

OnePlus 8 Pro Onyx Black 12+256GB MP 02376 review

The 8 Pro shows OnePlus is no longer the underdog significantly undercutting the big boys on price. Instead it has filled the cost-cutting gaps with features that truly rival the best from others.

OnePlus 8 Pro Onyx Black 12+256GB MP 02376 review

Fantastic display; Fast; solid performance; OxygenOS is light; adds a few meaningful features and improvements; Great camera performance; 3x telephoto is cool

A bit chunky and heavy; The storage-hungry might want larger options or microSD slot; Speakers are a bit harsh

OnePlus 8 Pro Onyx Black 12+256GB MP 02376 review

The OnePlus 8 Pro is the best phone it has offered up so far. It excites me. Not because it necessarily does something better than others, but because it does what other flagships do at a cheaper price.

OnePlus 8 Pro Glacial Green 12+256GB MP 02389 review

The OnePlus 8 Pro might not be the outright bargain we've come to expect from the brand, but for your £900 you get the best all-round phone for Android gamers on the market, with a phenomenal 120Hz screen and top-drawer performance.

OnePlus 8 Pro Onyx Black 12+256GB MP 02376 review

Starting at $899, the OnePlus 8 Pro is undoubtedly one of OnePlus’ most expensive devices to date . Adding features such as the class-leading Snapdragon 865 processor with X55 modem, 30W wireless charging, official IP68 certification, and a high-quality 120Hz display only pushed the price tag...

Fantastic 120Hz display Fast 30W wired and wireless charging Official IP Rating Streamlined software Versatile cameras Good battery life

No optical zoom lens Gimmicky Color filter camera drives up price 3W reverse wireless charging is relatively slow Jitter in multitasking
