Olympus Tough TG-5 Review: The New Underwater Camera King

The TG-5 provides you with a versatile fill flash, which can improve images even in decent lighting situations, like in this group portrait of my wife, daughter and son. Like the Nikon Coolpix W300, I didn't notice any conspicuous distortion (barrel or pincushion distortion) at images shot at either...

Wide range of versatile features and modes; Menus; dials and controls offer multiple access points to settings; Impressive macro features; Can capture slow-motion video at HD resolution; Includes ability to capture RAW image files

Struggles in low-light situations; Menu structure is somewhat confusing; Zoom mechanism produces noise during video capture

Camera is terrific.

The camera is everything that I was looking for. It is robust, easy to use with a low learning curve to understand how to use it. The picture quality is great. I also like how compact it is and how it is not like bigger cameras where people "know" you are taking their picture.

Olympus Tough TG-5

As its name suggests, the Tough TG-5 is a tough, rugged compact camera designed to be used in conditions that would render other point-and-shoots a pile of useless plastic. Waterproof to 15 metres, freeze-proof to -10ºC, crush-proof to a pressure of 100kg, sealed against dust and sand, protected...

Excellent photo quality; 4K and slo-mo video recording; Sensors aplenty; Virtually indestructible

Limited zoom range; Pricey for a compact

Olympus Tough TG-5

This sadly is one of those occasions where the launch bears no resemblance to the availability of review samples, so while I was ready to go when the launch came my memory of exactly what the camera can do was somewhat dimmed by the time taken for one to arrive which means the time required to...

Olympus TG-5 review

The TG-5 feels and performs like a premium rugged compact, delivering high quality stills and videos as well as the nigh-on unbreakable build quality of an adventurer’s tool. While the price is fairly high in comparison to rivals like the £150 Fujifilm XP120, the TG-5’s talents go above and beyond the basics – look no further than the slo-mo, 4K video capabilities and the gorgeous macro mode. If those are important to you, it might just be the perfect photographic sidekick for your extreme holiday.

Great image quality; 4K video recording; Expandable design;

Expensive compared to rivals; Limited zoom reach;

Olympus Tough TG-5 Review

Olympus cameras have enjoyed the top spot in our waterproof category since the introduction of the TG-1. The fifth iteration, the aptly named TG-5 ($449.99), raises the performance bar thanks to the addition of 4K video capture and 20fps Raw shooting, but keeps the basic design and lens from previous models. It's priced higher than the TG-4 that came before it, but it's the best rugged camera you can buy, and our Editors' Choice. Design and Features The TG-5 ($449.00 at Amazon) , available in black or red, has a few physical changes from previous models, but maintains the same form factor. It measures 2.6 by 4.4 by 1.3 inches (HWD) and weighs 8.8 ounces. The lens sits at the center of the body, unlike other tough cameras that place it in a corner, so there's room for a mounting ring for accessory lenses and flashes. Olympus sells fish-eye and telephoto conversion lenses, as well ring lights that redirect and diffuse the camera's LED or Xenon flash to surround the lens for macro wo...

The Olympus Tough TG-5 is a go-anywhere camera with a fast lens, speedy response, and 4K video, but it's more expensive than previous iterations.

Tough, waterproof build; Wide aperture lens; Quick focus; Excellent macro capability; 20fps burst shooting; Raw support; 4K video capture; GPS and Wi-Fi

Expensive; Rear screen can pick up scratches; 460k-dot LCD; 4K footage is cropped; Omits full manual mode

Super Pocket Camera

I previously had the TG4 and used it a lot. The mistake I made was not putting a screen protector on it when I had it new, thinking that as it was "tough" I wouldn't need it. However, the screen became very scratched which is the only negative thing I can say. I upgraded to the TG5.
