Olympus Tough TG-1

Olympus has been on the tough and waterproof camera tip for a long time now. Its range of mju and Tough cameras has often delivered in the rugged stakes, but lacked higher spec features to make for a really attractive prospect. Can the latest Olympus Tough TG-1 change that?
Pros:
  • Tough
  • waterproof
  • f/2.0 lens useful when camera decides to utilise its potential
  • GPS
  • converter adapter is fun
Cons:
  • Inaccurate focusing
  • protective lens window smudges easily and can diminish image quality
  • image quality nothing special
  • bulky design
  • limited battery life (could have a bigger battery in this large body)
  • lack of manual controls
  • awkward zoom control placement

A great camera

I'm using my new camera in the Solomon Islands and it's taking some great photos not only of the wonderful Islands but under water as well. Travelled to Mbike Island the other day for some diving, snorkelling and lying on the beach, the camera was easy to use, worked really well under water and I...

Tough-cams have come a long way over the past few years, but they've been best used as specialty cameras for the outdoors. Days at the beach, adventures on a mountain, a weekend at the slopes-whatever, as long as it was outside, in bright light.

Olympus' Tough TG-1 iHS rugged camera to beat

Instead of producing just another really rugged camera (which it is), the Olympus Tough TG-1 iHS has something no other model currently offers: a bright f2.0 maximum aperture. In fact, the other rugged compacts on the market -- including those from Olympus -- have fairly slow lenses with maximum...
Pros:
  • The Olympus Tough TG-1 iHS is water-, dust-, freeze-, shock-, and crushproof
  • has fast shooting performance for its class
  • and has a fast lens with the capability to add on converter lenses for more shooting flexibility
Cons:
  • The TG-1 iHS has some minor design issues
  • such as a proprietary charging cable
  • that might turn some buyers off

Olympus Tough TG-1 review

The 4.5-18mm (25-100mm equivalent) wide zoom lens has a maximum aperture of f/2-4.9, with the 4x optical zoom lens ideal for most situations, although I would prefer a slightly longer focal length.

The TG-1 is the best tough camera from Olympus yet. The total redesign over previous models, as well as a whole new suite of internal specs, ensures that many of the issues that plagued previous cameras in the range are no longer a problem.
Pros:
  • Strong macro performance
  • A range of add-on lenses are available
  • Incredibly tough credentials
Cons:
  • Lens zoom sound detracts from audio quality of video recordings
  • Overly saturated blue channel in some situations

So-So pictures

I really want to love this camera, but can only like it. I love taking macros so it is a real winner. I wanted something I gould carry in the saddle for quick photos and nothing is faster, but the fine detail is just lacking.
Pros:
  • Powers up and can take a photo in 1 second! Takes incredible macros and close ups
  • Super high speed shutter and up to 60fps stills
  • Sturdy construction, hefty feel
  • Takes clear underwater photos
  • Can be taken under water and in the rain
  • Easy menu navigation
  • Super easy video button.
Cons:
  • High price
  • Poor distance photos
  • Look like watercolors, no sharp detail
  • Slow switching between modes
  • Super high speed shutter drops down to 3mp
  • No lens cover, hard to grab without sticking a finger on the lens.
