Olympus has seen great success in the mirrorless camera world with its PEN series. The line's latest iteration is the E-PL5, a micro 4/3 camera that shares a few details with its more expensive brother, the OMD-EM5. It shoots beautifully—what's the catch?

[REVIEW-OLYMPUS PEN E-PL5 compact system camera]
This 16 megapixel camera uses the same sensor as the OMD E-M5, which means good low light, low noise performance and, with the kit lens, fast auto focus. The touch sensitive LCD swivels on one plane. Focus can be set and shutter fired with one touch on the critical point on the screen.

Olympus PEN E-PL5 Review
The whole idea behind MILCs is to provide photo-enthusiasts with a viable alternative to their heavy and bulky DSLR cameras. Although it's considerably lighter and more compact as compared to DSLR cameras, the problem with these cameras (especially with Micro 4/3 cameras) is that its sensor is much...

Olympus E-PL5
The Olympus E-PL5 packs serious photographic power into a small package -- thanks in large part to the 16-megapixel Live MOS sensor it borrows from the company's acclaimed OM-D E-M5. The image quality produced by a compact system camera at this price point is simply astounding.

- Excellent image quality with good color and dynamic range
- Great high ISO performance for its class

- Lightweight, compact and ergonomic design
- Touchscreen LCD that tilts all the way forward for taking self...
Cons:
- Confusing and frustrating menu system takes hours to master
- AF isn't optimal for taking fast-motion action shots
- LCD viewfinding suffers under direct sunlight
- Mediocre HD video quality
- No built-in flash (but a small external flash is included), Camera may be too small for some, Labyrinthine...

Like many cameras in this class, the E-PL5 lacks a built-in flash, but it's packaged with a neat little add-on unit which syncs via an ISO-standard hotshoe, although you obviously can't have both this and an EVF on the camera at the same time… not likely to be a massive hardship in the general...
