Olympus E-PL1

Olympus attempts to address the biggest concern facing photographers who wish to step up from a compact camera to a more robust interchangeable lens system: price. At AU$999, the E-PL1 will be very tempting for many photographers looking at a digital SLR but are put off by the weight and size.
Pros:
  • Pop-up flash
  • Excellent SLR image quality for the price
  • Good noise control
  • HD video recording
Cons:
  • Slow autofocus
  • Small
  • low-resolution LCD

E-PL1

While the E-PL1 doesn't quite have the retro chic of the E-P1 and E-P2, it is generally a much improved camera and at a slightly cheaper price too. In fact, if you're a novice photographer who wants to be able to control the camera like the pros without having the steep learning curve of...
Pros:
  • : Solid number of features for pros and novices alike
  • iAuto mode is brilliant for novice shooters
  • good picture quality
Cons:
  • : Not as nice-looking as the E-P2
  • autofocus still slower than the competition

Olympus PEN E-PL1 review

The Olympus PEN E-PL1 is a decent interchangeable lens camera that's capable of taking clear and vibrant pictures; its art modes are also a lot of fun. However, it really does need a built-in electronic viewfinder (EVF), or at least a bundle that includes one at the same price.

Olympus Pen E-PL1 review Review

The Olympus Pen E-PL1 is cheaper and more plasticky than the Pen E-P1 and Pen E-P2, and ought to be worse -- but it's not. It handles better and does more, thanks to its built-in flash.
Pros:
  • Impressive design and handling
  • Excellent image quality
  • Smashing video-recording features
Cons:
  • Buttons feel rather cheap
  • Shonky contracting-lens mechanism

About time...

Yes, it's larger than your average compact digital camera but it takes a beautiful photo. The manual controls are a bit fiddly but that's not why you would buy this camera. This camera gives a great point-and-shoot experience while offering SLR quality images.

There are, perhaps, three types of potential users who might find themselves considering purchasing the E-PL1, all of who will find things to love and things to be frustrated by in the camera.
Pros:

  • Superb JPEG engine makes camera's full capability easily accessible
  • Reliable metering and white balance (in natural light
  • Good AF performance (though kit lens holds it back
  • Hints of...
Cons:
  • Some highlight clipping (and poor dynamic range at ISO 100
  • Low resolution screen that's hard to see in bright light
  • No orientation sensor means having to rotate every portrait image manually
  • Exposure controls slow and awkward to use (by DSLR standards
  • 1/2000th max shutter speed combined with...

Works good for me!

I am the reason the E-PL1 was made. A point and shooter who wants to move up to a better camera but doesn't want to break the bank. This does that very well and it's not so big that I mind carrying it around.
