Astonishing camera

Overall a stellar package with the kit lens. The obvious items are that this is a really small package for SLR capabilities. I get really sharp photos overall and very little noise in low light.
Pros:
  • Sharp photos
  • great low light
  • beautiful viewfinder
  • touchscreen focusing
  • weather sealed
Cons:
  • Price
  • would like brighter kit lens

So, the first of the OM-D series cameras really has a lot of making up to do. And pro Olympus OM leanings don't actually mean it's going to get an easier run on these pages. In fact, if it doesn't deliver, the disappointment is going to be far more profound and the criticism harsher.

Olympus has delivered a fantastic camera, which, along with its premium CSC cohorts, has the potential to be a game-changer, stealing focus from certain areas of the DSLR market. There's a lot to love about the OM-D, especially the great image quality and its retro appeal - it will be interesting to...

Olympus OM-D E-M5 Review: A Classic Revived

If I were in the market for a mirrorless, interchangeable lens compact digital and was not wedded to any particular manufacturer or system, the E-M5 would probably be it. Of all the other cameras in this class that I've already reviewed, I like this one the best.
Pros:
  • Good images and video
  • DSLR-like feature set
  • Compact
  • stylish form factor
Cons:
  • Costly body-only configuration
  • grip and lenses add expense
  • A 2x crop factor doesn't lend itself to wide angle shooting

Olympus OM-D E-M5 review

The latest micro four-thirds camera from Olympus is clearly designed to appeal to all those hoary, wisened photographers who long for the good ol' days. Olympus' new digital OM series is modeled after the company's original, beloved OM film cameras from the 1970s.
Pros:
  • Compact, relatively light magnesium body
  • Both the body and the 12-50mm kit lens are weather-sealed
  • Fun, creative art filters for in-camera experimentation
  • A wide array of available lenses.
Cons:
  • No built-in pop-up flash
  • Can't change exposure settings while shooting video
  • Shallow eye cup diminishes the EVF's effectiveness in bright outdoor situations

A big step forward at its time

Have had this camera for one-and-a-half years now. It was a revolution in mirrorless cameras (and photography in general) when it first came out. I also have a Nikon D7000, but use this one more due to sheer portability.

Olympus OM-D EM-5 review

Olympus and Panasonic jointly developed the Micro Four Thirds system that kick-started the compact system camera (CSC) movement, but Olympus's early PEN cameras were overshadowed by the sprightlier performance of Panasonic's G series and, later, the higher image quality of Sony's NEX range.

Olympus OM-D E-M5 review by halfmac

The best m43rds to date. I put my hands on an Olympus OM-D (EM-5) and I loved it right away. It left the store with me. I have been testing it on real shoots. The camera did a great job. I shot both stills and movies. When Olympus first announced the camera I was impressed but was not that excited.
Pros:
  • Small
  • light
  • weather sealed
  • retro looks
  • great viewfinder and image quality
Cons:
  • wish it had a flip LCD on back
