Olympus OM-D E-M5 is a great camera for the great outdoors

Much as it did when launching the PEN series of Micro Four Thirds cameras, Olympus trots out another beloved film brand and updates it for the digital age. This time out, though, Olympus frames enthusiasts squarely in the scene.
Pros:
  • A dust-and-weather-sealed design distinguishes the Olympus OM-D E-M5 from the rest of the interchangeable-lens crowd
  • and its class-leading performance doesn't hurt
  • either.
Cons:
  • The photo quality is solid
  • but not outstanding
  • especially if you shoot only JPEG

Olympus OM-D E-M5

The Olympus OM-D E-M5 is the latest Micro Four Thirds compact system camera from Olympus and its first with a built-in viewfinder. Announced in May 2012, the E-M5 design is based on the popular and, for it's time, diminutive Olympus OM series of SLRs, from the late 1970s.

Cons:
  • Screen only tilts and there's no touch functions in movie modes
  • Distracting whirring noise from stabilisation motor
  • No built-in mic socket
  • Flash unit clips-on rather then being built-in
  • Continuous AF not as consistent as a phase-detect system

I have only had the E-M5 for a week but I think I have really put it to the test. The first thing I noticed like everyone else is how small the E-M5 is. It is about as small as I want a camera to be. Any smaller and I don't think I could work with it well.
Pros:
  • Easy to use
  • Beautiful Olympus colors
  • Low noise (for Olympus)
  • Lightweight
Cons:
  • Viewfinder in the center of the camera
