Octopath Traveler review: A solid throwback to the JRPG greats

After more than a year of waiting, Octopath Traveler has finally arrived on the Nintendo Switch, and boy are JRPG fans excited. One look at its aesthetic is all you need to begin drawing comparisons to the many excellent JRPGs from the 1990s, like Secret of Mana , Final Fantasy VI , and Chrono...

A big; meaty RPG you can sink your teeth into; Combat system is varied; tactical; and deep; Fantastic graphics and soundtrack

Story is disjointed with no single direction; Characters never really develop relationships; Chapter structure gets a little old after a while

Octopath Traveler

One look at the carefully detailed munchkin-like sprites at the heart of Octopath Traveler is confirmation of this turn-based role-playing game's allegiance to the SNES-era RPG. Octopath Traveler

I give thanks to Family Friendly Gaming for purchasing a copy of Octopath Traveler on the Nintendo Switch. The PR and Marketing players who represent this game want no sales from the millions within FFGU ever. Will you respect that wish or not

Octopath Traveler Review

Golden Age

Gorgeous visuals and slick animations; Superlative soundtrack; Fantastic combat system; Tons of things to do and locations to explore

Side quests are far too vague; Some QOL and design issues

For a certain set of role-playing fans, the Super NES era represents the golden standard of RPG design. That's nostalgia speaking to a certain degree; after all, many people encountered menu-based battles with teams of magic-slinging warriors through the likes of Final Fantasy 6 and Chrono Trigger .

Eight people gather in a tavern, swapping stories and preparing for adventure. It's not clear why they're traveling together-there's a pious cleric and a murderous dancer in this odd crew-but they've united nonetheless.

Fantastic combat; visuals; music

Grindy; repetitive; shallow stories

Octopath Traveler Review – An Ageless Adventure

There's no school like the old school as Square Enix takes us back to a classic era with Octopath Traveler, a traditional turn-based role-playing game that ticks all of the boxes sought after by the old people who still remember playing Final Fantasy on their Super Nintendo.

Octopath Traveler Review

Octopath Traveler draws inspiration from a lot of places that makes it feel almost like a classic Final Fantasy game from the early nineties. It is said to be a sort of spiritual successor to these classic games and from the opening right until the end, this is clear.
