Nokia N900 review

Let's face it, there's no doubt that since the arrival of you-know-what from Apple, Nokia has found it tough to be taken seriously in the smartphone market. With the Linux Maemo 5-powered N900 however, it's right back in the game. As a phone though the N900 is big and bulky.

so much for progress...

I've been using this phone (and still do) since it came out and I find the operating system its biggest strength (especially from 2013 on when the community has really fleshed it out) .

The N900, in some ways, is the definitive device that could turn the tide for Nokia. On the aesthetic level, it does have its appeal with its simple form factor. Yet, there are still kinks for the Nokia team to work on.

Nokia N900: Powerful, but Missing Some Key Features

The Nokia N900 is ideal for techies who want a lot of customization and power; anyone looking for apps and aesthetics may want to go with a more mainstream smartphone. Nokia fans disappointed by last summer’s N97 smartphone, get excited: The Nokia N900 ($570, unlocked; price as of December 18, 2009) delivers on its promises of fast performance and excellent Web browsing. It also offers solid multimedia features, as well as one of the best cameras I’ve used on a smartphone. But the N900 isn’t for everyone: Some people might find the Linux-based Maemo (MAY-mo) platform confusing and not as user-friendly as other platforms. The handset is also missing some crucial features, such as app-store support and MMS messaging, as well as full Exchange support.
Pros:
  • Superb camera
  • Excellent browsing experience
Cons:
  • Interface can be tricky to navigate
  • No MMS support
