Nokia N9 review: Nokia N9
If you don't know the difference between an iPhone and an Android, and you'd love a smartphone for web browsing and email, then the N9 could be for you. Hounded by critics and deserted by customers, Nokia has been forced to take a massive change of direction in 2011, with one of the obvious casualties of this new outlook being the Linux-based MeeGo operating system that Nokia has been developing with Intel. The N9 is the first and maybe the only smartphone to run on the MeeGo OS, and, in many ways, it will be a shame if this is true.
Pros:
- Superb design
- Extremely easy to use
- Unified messaging is excellent
- Web browser is fast.
Cons:
- Battery life suffers with always-on communications
- Loads of missing smartphone features.

When we think of smartphones, simplicity isn't always the first word that comes to mind. But that's the word Nokia is using in the widespread marketing of its latest mobile device – the eye-catching N9.

Nokia N9
Despite a laundry list of missing features, the N9 is Nokia's best phone for a long time. The MeeGo OS feels lean and fast, and the messaging system is a winner. The web browser is limited in its features and controls, but is pleasingly zippy when loading pages.
Pros:
- Superb design
- Extremely easy to use
- Unified messaging is excellent
- Web browser is fast
Cons:
- Battery life suffers with always-on communications
- Loads of missing smartphone features

Nokia N9 smartphone
The Nokia N9 is the best looking and slickest smartphone Nokia has ever built. It's a combination of superbly built hardware and slick, easy to use, elegant software. However, it's priced too high to compete with iOS and Android alternatives and we can't help but feel it's about 18 months too late. Beautifully simple. That's the marketing tag-line for Nokia's promotion of the N9 smartphone, the first and last Nokia phone to run the MeeGo operating system. The N9 is the best looking and slickest device the company has released in a number of years. Although it can't compete with Android's flexibility, or iOS's number and quality of third-party apps, the Nokia N9's great design, superb display and ease of use makes it a valid alternative if you're looking for something different. It's just a shame it's so late to market and is essentially running a dead operating system.
Pros:
- Fantastic design and build quality
- Bright and clear screen
- Slick and easy to use software
Cons:
- Limited third-party apps
- First and last MeeGo phone
- Below average battery life

Once in a lifetime
When the first touch-only OS debuts on one of the hottest pieces of hardware this year, you can bet we want a piece of the action. Windows Phone is where Nokia want your attention, but it might turn out that MeeGo is the place you want to be.

Amazing
The Nokia N9 is a phone that is simply a pleasure to use. A swipe takes you between three homescreen views: an app list, an event feed and a multitasking view. A swipe from the edge of the screen is also used to take you out of an app.

Nokia N9 Review: Beautifully Frustrating
Nokia's N9 is a smartphone chock full of contradictions. I love the design and the operating system, but I'm frustrated by it too. It's enough to drive me to poetry. I've got to be honest. When Nokia first handed an N9 over to me to test, I wasn't expecting much.
