Nokia N9

Despite a laundry list of missing features, the N9 is Nokia's best phone for a long time. The MeeGo OS feels lean and fast, and the messaging system is a winner. The web browser is limited in its features and controls, but is pleasingly zippy when loading pages.
Pros:
  • Superb design
  • Extremely easy to use
  • Unified messaging is excellent
  • Web browser is fast
Cons:
  • Battery life suffers with always-on communications
  • Loads of missing smartphone features

Nokia N9 review: Nokia N9

If you don't know the difference between an iPhone and an Android, and you'd love a smartphone for web browsing and email, then the N9 could be for you. Hounded by critics and deserted by customers, Nokia has been forced to take a massive change of direction in 2011, with one of the obvious casualties of this new outlook being the Linux-based MeeGo operating system that Nokia has been developing with Intel. The N9 is the first and maybe the only smartphone to run on the MeeGo OS, and, in many ways, it will be a shame if this is true.
Pros:
  • Superb design
  • Extremely easy to use
  • Unified messaging is excellent
  • Web browser is fast.
Cons:
  • Battery life suffers with always-on communications
  • Loads of missing smartphone features.

Nokia N9 review

The Nokia N9 is, without doubt, one of the most fascinating phones of the last few years. The tale of its development and launch interweaves almost all the multivariate strands of the Nokia narrative.
Pros:
  • Utterly gorgeous
  • Innovative
  • fresh UI
  • Quick camera operation
Cons:
  • Doomed ecosystem
  • Old processor
  • Unstable software

Nokia is well known for their camera quality and the N9 certainly does not disappoint. The Carl Ziess lens based camera takes beautiful pictures and takes them reasonably fast as long as flash is not involved. Using the dual LED flash will result in the familiar but minimal lag.

Review of Nokia's N9, its first and last MeeGo powered smartphone

The Nokia N9 was announced to the world in June of this year. By October, it was replaced with the successor to Nokia's throne, the Lumia 800. Dan takes a look at the unique N9 and its equally different hardware and software in our full review of Nokia's only MeeGo smartphone.
Pros:
  • Gorgeous hardware design
  • excellent display
  • solid camera
Cons:
  • Weak app ecosystem
  • occasional performance bugs
  • you can't buy it in most markets

I have been using the N9 for about a year, and looking back I've been mostly happy with it. Sometimes even ecstatic (design and software), but a few times it left me wanting more (app space and battery life).

Great SmartPhone

This is a solid unlocked GSM phone for those looking for something different. It also is not considered a smartphone by AT&T and thus you do not have to have a data plan. Shame that the Nokia killed the Meego OS so apps/support are sparse but hopefully Jolla Sailfish will change that.
Pros:
  • ? Responsive OS with the exception of social media ? Long battery life – usually 3-4 hours drains it 10% ? Display clarity is great thanks to ClearBlack
  • setting the phone to vivid colors makes it pop even more ? Comes with case, although it is hard to put on/off & is rather thin so protects mostly...
Cons:
  • ? Lack of supports/apps – this may change when Jolla Sailfish gets going ? Sensitive screen – constantly selecting something when I am just scrolling ? Volume a tad on the low side
  • especially the speakerphone ? Syncing to Outlook – does not work with the latest version of Nokia Suite so had to...
