The Nokia 4.2 has been a roller coaster. My initial review unit suffered from constant stutters and freezes that made using the phone a hair-pulling affair. The second unit has delivered a markedly improved experience, but it doesn't stop this $189 phone from having several compromises.

HMD Global has built up a stellar track record in the recent past by reviving a brand (Nokia) that was struggling not even a few years ago. In 2019, the brand has announced a few handsets at the Mobile World Congress 2019 and out of those, the Nokia 4.2 was the first launch in India.

Nokia smartphones under HMD Global have a long way to go in the India market, which is largely dominated by Chinese OEMs. But it's surely on the right track with a bevy of trendy looking budget and mid range smartphones.

While it looks and feels great in the hand, Nokia appears to have cut back a little too much when it comes to everyday performance. The Nokia 4.2 simply doesn't perform as well as its classy design suggests it should.

It's clear that the Nokia 4.2 is a slight misstep for the Finnish firm. We don't expect a phone at this end of the price scale to be faultless, but when the Nokia 4.2's issues are this plentiful – and the Moto G7 Play does things better in almost every regard – it struggles to earn a recommendation.

In our test, the Nokia 4.2 presents itself as a reliable smartphone at an affordable price. Despite the small storage equipment, the system runs smoothly and has no difficulties running simple everyday apps such as the Internet browser, WhatsApp, or Mail apps.
