After launching the Z6 and Z7 last year, the next thing people wanted to know is how Nikon planned to expand its new family of mirrorless cameras so that more people could buy them.

The new Nikon Z50 mirrorless camera is the smallest interchangeable-lens DX-format camera Nikon offers, and as you can probably tell, I liked it a lot. It’s small and rugged with surprisingly high build quality for the price, and its thin, sleek design is very attractive.

The Z50 is Nikon’s latest effort at winning over users in the mirrorless camera market, after the now-defunct N1 and the groundbreaking Z6 and Z7 from last year.

The Nikon Z50 offers the best quality in out-of-camera JPEGs among APS-C mirrorless cameras we've tested so far, making it a fantastic camera to buy for first-time camera buyers. As a professional's second kit, it falls a bit short.

The Z50 is reasonably priced and doesn’t disappoint. We were super impressed by the autofocus system; it performed very well. We would have liked it to have more dynamic range, but for the price it is acceptable. Its low light performance is fine, though a bit below most mirrorless cameras.

. “How can that be?!” I hear you say. The Z50 is a nice camera, it works well, ergonomically it’s near perfect, it produces nice images, but there’s nothing special about it. Because of that, it lags behind the competition.
