Nikon Z50 Mirrorless Camera with 16-50mm Lens VOK050XA review

The Z50 is a capable and comfortable camera to use, for a wide range of photography. The autofocus system is a little more awkward than it needs to be, but generally it's a hugely competitive camera. If the lenses you want to use exist, it should be on your list of cameras to consider.

Travel and everyday photography.

Landscapes and high resolution imagery; Team sports.

Nikon Z50 Mirrorless Camera with 16-50mm Lens VOK050XA review

“The Z 50 lets you trim video in-camera and share it wirelessly to your phone, making it perfect for the influencer on the go.”

Weather-sealed; ergonomic design; Excellent image quality; 11 fps burst speed; Wireless video transfers

Autofocus struggles in low light; Few native DX lenses at launch

Nikon Z50 Mirrorless Camera with 16-50mm Lens VOK050XA review

The Nikon Z50 enters the APS-C mirrorless market with the wide-diameter Z-mount introduced for the full-frame Z6 and Z7. Two dim variable-aperture DX lenses were introduced with the Z50, although it works withe all native Z-mount lenses.

Superb dynamic-range; Low image noise; Excellent metering; Good colors accuracy; Above average Auto White-Balance; Accurate autofocus; Quick and responsive; Comfortabe ergonmics; Good battery-life

Slow AF in low-light; Poor Continuous AF; Touch-only controls; Poor EC button location; Preview not always Exposure-Priority; Bizarre Auto ISO; Only DX lenses are dim; Condensation prone

Nikon Z50 Mirrorless Camera with 16-50mm Lens VOK050XA review

The Z50 is a good debut for Nikon’s Z mount APS-C mirrorless system. Unfortunately, it’s entering a very competitive market and faces some strong competition, particularly Fujifilm’s X-T30.

Great handling; compact size; Good EVF; Sharp 4K video; Decent performance and autofocus

Lowest resolution in its category; Single UHS-I card; Limited lens choices

Nikon Z50 Mirrorless Camera with 16-50mm Lens VOK050XA review

The new Nikon Z50 mirrorless camera is the smallest interchangeable-lens DX-format camera Nikon offers, and as you can probably tell, I liked it a lot. It’s small and rugged with surprisingly high build quality for the price, and its thin, sleek design is very attractive.

Nikon Z50 Mirrorless Camera with 16-50mm Lens VOK050XA review

The Z50 is Nikon’s latest effort at winning over users in the mirrorless camera market, after the now-defunct N1 and the groundbreaking Z6 and Z7 from last year.

Nikon Z50 Mirrorless Camera with 16-50mm Lens VOK050XA review

The Nikon Z50 offers the best quality in out-of-camera JPEGs among APS-C mirrorless cameras we've tested so far, making it a fantastic camera to buy for first-time camera buyers. As a professional's second kit, it falls a bit short.
