Live Up To Its Reputation

I am a professional photographer. I do fine art reproductions. I have been using the 105mm lens for years and I recently upgraded to the 85mm lens in anticipation of using a D850. I have been using a D810. I do not want to move the camera further back with the D850. This lens takes beautiful photos.

It does exactly what its supposed to do

The 85 1.4g is an amazing lens, has all the features you want, none of the features you don't need. Perfect Bokeh, probably one of the 3 best portrait lenses you can get for the nik. One shortcoming is that it just feels sorta plastic, but what doesn't these days...

Amazing bokeh; Consistent Output; Fast / accurate auto-focus; Lightweight; Nice Bokeh

Feels Cheep; One Trick Pony

Fantastic portraits

Excellent lens on the D3, portraits, night/indoor photography. Love the way I can isolate the subject.

Consistent Output; Fast / accurate auto-focus; Nice Bokeh

Excellent!

This is a great lens with fantastic bokeh qualities. I use it with my D4 and am able to achieve desired results with great consistency.

I've never seen anything like it. Completely different sharpness and strong colours to my other Nikon lenses. I compared previous photos to my new shots. Did a set of Brisbane around Fortitude Valley, impromptu portrait shots when a neighbour came over with his daughter, portrait of guitar playing,...

Nikon 85mm f/1.4G AF-S Nikkor

This might be the highest quality optics for an 85mm lens available. It's as sharp as sharp gets wide open and edge to edge. If this sombrero effect is visible, it is not by these eyes nor any other reviewer. This optic is best of class and worth the price for someone who wants the very best.

Very sharp; beautiful micro contrast; magnesium internal parts; external polycarbonate; Nano coating

Would prefer an aperture ring

In preparation for the 2010 Photokina in Cologne, Germany next month, Nikon is announcing three new lenses for their FX and DX-format DSLRs. All three are fairly large lenses that use 77mm filters, which is now standard for higher-end Nikon lenses.

The classic 85mm f/1.4 – a long-admired and respected lens in any mount, and especially renowned as the Nikon AF-D, introduced in 1995. As part of their recent push to update all their fast primes – and introduce a few new ones – Nikon's new 85mm f/1.4G AF-S with Nano Crystal Coating represents a...
