Worth the upgrade cost from the 85mm D

I was hesitant to get this lens as I wasn't convinced that it would be worth the extra cost over the 85mm f 1.4D that I already own. After the first shooting session I was convinced!

Better edge-to-edge focus; Consistent Output; Fast / accurate auto-focus; Nice Bokeh; Quiet focus; Silent Wave Motor; Strong Construction

Stunning

Image quality from this lens is excellent throughout. At 1.4 it can be a little soft but that's to be expected. Skin tones are fantastic and very flattering due to the slightly warm tint it produces. The AF is very accurate and consistent although not particularly fast.

Bokeh; Great Picture Quality; Skin Tones

quickly became my favorite - surprisingly easy to carry and produces excellent images

Incredible lens, quickly became my favorite - surprisingly easy to carry and produces excellent images, both of scenes and portraits - great contrast and really sees "light" better than most!

The best lens nikon makes!

This lens would have been 5 stars, but Nikon had to make a 1.8 version that is 95% of this lens, and 1/3 the cost. So It get's -1 for the cost to performance ratio. For the masses the 1.8 is a steal for the must have the best there is no 1.4 better.

Amazing Bokeh; Durable; Easy To Use; Reliable; Sharp

Nikon 85mm f/1.4G AF-S Nikkor review by timtomgo

There is nothing bad to say about. If there is a weakness it could be its relative lack of sharpness at 1.4 in the center COMPARED to the sigma and the canon. This is mostly because of CA's, once removed in post processing you almost wouldn't see the difference honnestly.

contrasty; razor sharp; very fast AF considering the kind of lens

expensive; not 1.2 :p

Expected Quality Delivered by This Lens

After waiting, saving, considering, and studying, I finally chose this lens for my portraiture work over the 105mm lens and over competing brands of 85mm lenses. I was not disappointed at all. The lens is solidly built and delivers a sharp image from corner to corner.

Nice prime for portraits

"Balances wonderfully with a D600. Bokeh is excellent for portraits, flowers, etc. However, I prefer the more versatile and extremely sharp 24-70 2.8 for landscape and street photography.
