Nikon 50mm f/1.8G AF-S Nikkor

My experience is the same as the reviewer. I was hoping to use this lens for landscapes as well, but it requires a lot of stopping down. Fine in low light, though - bit of a marvel there.

Great Centre sharpness, colour and contrast at maximum aperture in low light; Small lens

Overall sharpness only at smaller apertures

Cheapest mordern nikon full frame lens available that produces good image quality

I don't think its optical quality is as good as its new canon counterpart which is also much cheaper

Nikon AF-S 50mm f/1.8G Review

There was a time when almost every 35mm film camera came with a 50mm prime (fixed focal-length) lens because on a full-frame camera, the 50mm focal length captures roughly the same angle-of-view as is seen by the human eye.

Fantastic full-frame performance

Some chromatic aberration on DX-format sensor

Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm F/1.8G Lens AFS50MM F/1.8G review

With so many choices in the 50mm category, even just from Nikon, it's hard to figure who the target audience for the 50mm ƒ/1.8G. Obviously, owners of consumer bodies such as the D3100 or D5100, which don't have mechanical autofocus screws, will gravitate to this lens.

Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G Special Edition Review

The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G Special Edition ($279.95) is a dressed up version of the standard AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G($196.95 at Amazon) that features cosmetics that better match the retro Nikon Df. If you're paying the $150 premium to get the lens bundled with the camera it's a great value, but unless you're in love with its style you're better off saving some money and going with the standard 50mm f/1.8G. Very light at 6.7 ounces, the lens($276.95 at Amazon) measures just 2 by 2.8 inches (HD). Its filter thread supports 58mm filters, and a lens hood is included. Close focus is limited to just under 1.5 feet—you'll be able to frame subjects tightly and open up the aperture to blur the background, but don't expect this to perform double duty as a macro lens. The lens doesn't have any sort of image stabilization, as Nikon only puts that technology into zooms and telephoto prime lenses—it's rare that you'll see it in a 50mm lens from any manufacturer. There is an internal foc...

The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G Special Edition is optically identical to the standard version of the lens, but is priced higher.

Sharp; Compact; Wide aperture; Internal focus motor

No vibration reduction or aperture ring; Priced higher than standard version of lens based only on cosmetic changes

Nikon AF-S NIKKOR f/1.8G Lens review

This is a small and lightweight lens that can be carried around anywhere easily. However, the size should not be taken for its lack of performance. It can perform in any light condition, which is a stellar feature as far as the price goes.

Lightweight and easy to hold, Renders silky and natural-looking bokeh, Equipped with a super-fast and quiet autofocus, Subject and background mesh together beautifully, At full aperture, the resolution in the middle of the image is brilliant

Lens distortion issues are noticeable, Vignetting can be seen at full aperture, Aperture and vibration ring are not equipped
