Nikon 180mm f/2.8D ED-IF AF Nikkor review by Glutte

Mine is the AF 180mm ED non D model. I would have given this lens a perfect score if I had not been owner of a Nikon 180mm 2.8 ED ai-s before. This MF lens was sharper at f/2.8 and completely free of chromatic aberration and fringing.Bokey at 2.8 was a dream.

Very well built; Sharpness from f/4,exceptional lens after f/4; good bokey

chromatic aberration and color fringing f2.8

Amazing lens

Back in the film days I always wanted a 300 f/2.8 lens, but they were close to three grand even then and over five grand now. Now through the magic of DX format in my Nikon D7000 I can have close to one for about a fifth of the price in the 180 f/2.8 lens.

180 f2.8 instead fo 80-200 zoom

awesome optics. Way smaller and sharper than the 80-200 f2.8 zoom!!! This lens is great for travel. it is a bargain especially in the plastic barrel ED if version.

Best price professional sport lens ever

180mm 2.8 ultra light long sport lens ever. Super fast Af on D4s (if you are testing, you have to set focus tracking off otherwise even 300mm 2.8 will not perform well ) Perfect color and image quality.

Stellar Performance

This is a unique lens. Beautifully crafted and pro level optics. I got mine used but in mint condition. Was surprised at how light and small it was for a 180mm prime. On my D810 this lens is sharp wide open and renders beautiful images. The bokeh is superb and creamy and AF performance is excellent.

I love this lens for outdoor use. Very nice to picture people. It is somewhat long when carrying around. Also people will notice you! Definitely a lens I recommend.

Fast; very sharp; robust

No weather seal; a bit heavy and long

This is possibly the sharpest lens I have ever shot with. It produces beautiful colour and I loved using it to take portraits on my D70. Really good for portraits and for sport if you can get close enough to the action.

Light weight for its fast 2.8 Aperture, Solid build, Sharp; Even at 2.8, Beautiful Bokeh, Built in hood, Couples well with a tele converter

Sometimes it doesn't seem long enough; ie sports photography, Only really practical for head shot portraits unless you have alot of space to back up; I mainly used it for this anyway

The Sharpest Nikon Lens Ever, the Nikkor AF 180mm f/2.8D ED-IF

Old time photographers often talk about the wonderful optics of the past; the Leica, Zeiss, Schneide

Tack sharp; fast; excellent bokeh; superb color

No tripod collar

Excellent for Astrophotography

I have to confess that I did not get my 180mm Nikkor from Amazon as I found a mint condition used (well not used at all as far as I can tell) lens in a camera shop. Had I not, then Amazon would be my choice because I have always experienced a trouble-free returns service.

My favourite lens

I have a collection of about a dozen Nikkor lenses, ranging from 10.5mm to 300mm, and if I had to chose only one, it would be the 180mm. On my D90 it is effectively a 270mm f2.8 lens, at an astonishingly cheap price for the quality of its construction and optics.

Lightweight; Quick Focus; Sharp Focus; Strong Construction
