In October, 1996, I purchased a pair of Nikon 10X42 Superior "E" porro-prism binoculars. Although I got them through Le Naturaliste in Quebec, they actually came direct from Nikon in Toronto, since Le Naturalist does not stock them.

Not dependable

These binoculars are not waterproof. I used them for 2 months (they have a warranty of 25 years, one would think 2 months would not be a problem) and they started getting foggy inside of the lens.
Pros:
  • cheap
Cons:
  • Not waterproof
  • not great optics
  • not as cheap as they should be

Nikon Monarch ATB Realtree 10x42

Good Product. Not cheap, but not going to drain the bank account either. Lightweight and not noticeable when you are wearing them. Make sure to keep the warranty card and the recipt should you need to send them in for repairs.
Pros:
  • These binoculars are light, compact
  • They are crisp and clear and have the adjustable eyecups for those of you wearing glasses
  • The price was right, they were not cheap, but they aren't $1800 either.
Cons:
  • Couple of things I have had problems with
  • I may be a little rough on my equiptment, but it gets used a lot
  • I have had issues with the twist out eyecups
  • If they get dirty, or knocked around a little bit, they stuck either up or down, and had a slight angle to them.

Light Sturdy All Weather Binoculars

I purchased this camera for my wife for excursions to the beach and state parks to view wildlife, boat, and aircraft. It is perfect for beach conditions as it is waterproof, and fog proof. It is light so we can take it on hikes with us. The 8x magnification is perfect for our use.
Pros:
  • Close Focus
  • Lightweight
  • Strong Construction

Light and bright

These binoculars are light to wear and give a good bright image. The eye cups screw out to allow adjustment for spectacle wearers and there is diopter correction. Focus is quick and easy to use. Image is pretty good with very slight colour fringing. For the money pretty good.

Nikon SE 10x42 CF

Cons: Admiring the classic look of a Swarovski Habicht 10x40 W we turned a blind eye to several slip-ups of that device and its average quality/price ratio. In the case of the Nikon SE we don't lose the classic look either - all those who like old, good Porro constructions will be as much enchanted...
Pros:
  • solid construction
  • handy and very comfortable to hold
  • very high transmission
  • excellent whiteness reproduction
  • low chromatic aberration
  • very low coma
  • slight astigmatism
  • sharp image practically up to the edge of the field of vision
  • negligible light fall-off at the edge
  • slight flares
  • high...

Nikon SE 10x42 SE

These are considered the best view of any 10x made by many reviewers. See Better View Desired, etc. These are truly world class and compete well with the $1600 binoculars. I was surprised by the size, they are smaller and lighter than I imagined but the case is a bit large.

Compared to other top of the range binoculars, I would say that the Nikon EDG 10x42 binoculars are priced pretty well. If you take this into account with their excellent, class equalling but not class beating optical performance and their quality construction with all the features you would expect...
