Nikon D7000 Review

Having extensively tested the Nikon D7000, it's easy to understand why this camera ranks up there in popularity, even with a $1,200 price tag. Simply put, if you're serious about photography, you want this camera.

16.2MP APS-C DSLR; Terrific photos; Very responsive (6 fps; Top ISO of 25,600; Fast focusing; excellent detail

Hard to find and forget about a price break; Weird Release-Mode dial; Heavy noise above ISO 10,000-which is pretty amazing anyway; HD video still problematic

Nikon D7000 Review

Price is just as critical as any other element and the D7000's initial RRP is towards the top-end. To explain: Canon's 7D plus 18-135mm lens available for around £100 more and Canon's highly competitive 60D is some hundreds of pounds cheaper at the time of writing.

Fantastic AF system; excellent picture quality; great battery life

A little expensive; screen could be higher resolution; kit lens doesn't show camera's full potential

Generally camera manufacturers tend to follow a well-defined update path and it's usually pretty clear which model is meant to be replaced by a new one. With the announcement of the D7000 Nikon has - to a degree - broken with this pattern.

Good detail and dynamic range (even better in RAW; Exceptionally low shadow noise in RAW files; Arguably the best high ISO performance of any current APS-C DSLR; Good build quality and handling; Maximum ISO of 25,600 st full resolution; 1080p HD video mode with basic editing built-in; Efficient...

Tendency to overexpose in bright sunshine/high contrast situations; ISO button is poorly positioned; and cannot be assigned to any other control point; Ditto white balance: poorly positioned; cannot be re-assigned; Exposure mode dial slightly loose; and easily knocked; Shooting mode dial can be...

Nikon D7000

The Nikon D7000 represents an evolution of the company's venerable D90 -- the first digital SLR with movie capture capability and the first mid-range model with a high-res 3.0-inch VGA LCD panel.

Very good image quality, Better than average noise vs; detail handling at high ISOs, Very good dynamic range in JPEGs, excellent in RAW files, Lots of high-end features in a relatively compact body, Attention to detail results in a great handheld experience, Weather-sealed, magnesium alloy...

Viewfinder not as accurate as specified (ours is also slightly tilted relative to the sensor; Viewfinder doesn't show ISO unless adjusting; Auto white balance has trouble with household incandescent lighting (not unusual; unfortunately; No live histogram in Live View mode; Flash a little slow to

Dual SD/SDHC/SDXC card slots; Great low-light/high-ISO performance; Very good image and video quality,

Function and bracket buttons difficult to access; Full-time autofocus in video mode needs work; New

Nikon D7000

The Nikon D7000 is the company's latest mid-range DSLR. Announced in September 2010, the D7000 technically replaces the enormously popular D90, although that model will remain on sale while stocks last. The new numbering clearly positions the D7000 above the D5000, with the D3100 below both.

Great quality across its sensitivity range; Viewfinder with 100% coverage and VGA screen; 6fps continuous shooting at all quality settings; Dual memory card slots; 1080p video with AF; manual control and mic input

Continuous buffer limited in depth; Metering frequently over-exposed in bright conditions; Continuous movie AF indiscreet in use; Back-focusing error on our sample kit

The Nikon D7000 is a mid-size, digital single lens reflex (DSLR) still camera with a full high-definition video subsystem, bright viewfinder, one-button live view, full manual control, full auto operation if you choose, dual & configurable SD card slots, a built-in pop-up flash, weather resistant...

The Nikon D7000 is quite a camera; Gorgeous 1920 x 1080 24fps video in either MOV or H.264 format, that is clean and slick; Nikon jumped into professional quality video recording with the D3s and all of Nikon's considerable resources were brought to bear on making the technology, technical quality...

The early manufacturing runs of D7000 bodies had shooting mode dials which moved far too easily; Nikon seems to have tightened up the dial tolerance sometime during 2011, so the dial on cameras in more recent shipments no longer moves so unexpectedly, or indeed any more than similar dials on...

While View NX2 is an improvement on Nikon's earlier software options it doesn't really offer the enthusiast enough control and many will be eagerly awaiting Adobe's Camera Raw update to allow greater control over noise reduction, especially at the lower sensitivity settings.

Hands-on Report: Nikon D7000 DSLR Camera Review

Prior to launching the D7000, Nikon had some big shoes to fill in its prosumer/semi-pro line of cameras. A Review of the Nikon D7000

The D7000 offers nothing new or innovative in the way of functionality, but it takes some of the best features of the D3100, D90, and even the D300s, and combines them into a high quality, well-engineered, semi-pro DSLR. The following Nikon D7000 review explores exactly what it has to offer.
