Nikon D3400 Camera Review: Superior Shooter for Beginners

Nikon ' s latest entry-level DSLR, the 24 - megapixel D3400 , may not seem like much of an upgrade , and in some ways, it ' s not. In fact, it ' s missing a couple of features that were standard on its D3300 predecessor, such as a microphone jack and a dust-cleaning mechanism for the sensor.

Great image quality; Speedy performance; Excellent battery life; Good in low light; Easy transfer of images to mobile devices; Solid set of practical and creative features

No external microphone jack; Lack of dust-cleaning mechanism; No auto-exposure bracketing

Nikon D3400 Review

The Nikon D3400 is an update to Nikon's entry-level DSLR, replacing the two year old D3300. The headline new feature is SnapBridge – Nikon's low-power Bluetooth connection that allows continuous image transfer to your smartphone in the background while you shoot.

Nikon D3400

The Nikon D3400 is the company's entry-level model, which is designed to get those who are new to DSLR photography on the bandwagon – and in theory, to potentially make them customers for life.

Traditional DSLR styling and controls; Snapbridge; Long battery life; Simple to use

Fixed non-touch-sensitive screen; No Wi-Fi; No 4K video; Optical viewfinder doesn't offer 100% coverage

Nikon D3400 review

The Nikon D3400 is Nikon's latest entry-level DSLR and succeeds the D3300 that came out in 2014. Despite the two-year gap between the two models, there doesn't initially appear to be all that much to separate them, at least not in terms of their key specs.

Small and easy to use; Generous range of exposure modes; Provides access to Nikon's huge lens range; Excellent image quality

Currently a little pricey compared to the D3300; Removal of external microphone jack

Nikon D3400 review

Ever since its popular D40 model back in 2006, Nikon has done well to dismantle the idea of a DSLR needing to be a large, cumbersome machine. Of course, since then the company has released many even more compact mirrorless 1-series cameras aimed at a junior audience, although it's maintained its...

Great starter DSLR camera from a trusted camera brand

This was purchased as a present for a teenage boy's 16th birthday, and he absolutely loved it. It is his first DSLR camera and the training mode which is built into the camera is really handy as it makes it very easy to use right out of the box, without having to consult the manual too much...

No built in wifi

It says it comes with built in wifi but it doesnt, some newer cameras have a button older ones you can find wifi in setup menu. Nowhere in the entire menu can you find wifi which prevents me from snapping pictures with the nikon apps. Very disaapointed for what it costs.

Nikon D3400 review: the best entry-level DSLR money can buy

The D3400 was a little pricey at launch, but now its price has fallen it's a superb starting point for anyone new to DSLRs. It's easy to use, has excellent image quality and of course it's compatible with an enormous number of high quality lenses.

Light weight and compact; Great photos

No mic socket; Screen isn't a touchscreen

The D3400 left a bit to be desired considering that this is supposed to be an updated version of the D3300. With the removal of the in-body sensor cleaning and the external mic port we expected there to be a few more updates to the D3400 and, well, we just didn't get them.
