Nikon D3000 Review

By now you would've read enough to know that the Nikon D3000 is Nikon's most basic camera in their digital SLR lineup (and also the most affordable). Despite its low price tag and "entry-level" title, the Nikon D3000 is a very capable digital SLR with few compromises made to ‘differentiate' it from...
Pros:
  • Impressive image quality
  • on par with some higher end Nikon models, Relatively compact for a digital SLR, simple control layout, User-friendly interface and help screens
  • basic scene modes included, Full manual controls
  • flash hotshoe, RAW image mode, Customizable Function button and recent settings...
Cons:
  • Autofocus with AF-S/AI-S type lenses only, 11 point autofocus, Shutter life
  • rated at 100,000 shots, Menu system and user interface design, Kit lens is usable but not the sharpest lens around, Autofocus possible with AF-S/AI-S lenses only
  • lacks support for AF with legacy lenses, Limited RAW buffer...

Nikon D3000

Lately, more and more digital SLR cameras shoot high-definition video, but the new Nikon D3000 bucks this trend to focus purely on photos. The D3000 replaces the D60 at the bottom of Nikon's range. Its body is clearly derived from those of the D60, D40x and D40 .

Camera Test: Nikon D3000

You can get a lot of Nikon for your money-the $780 (body only) D90 pops readily to mind as a near-unbeatable deal. But what about the lowest-price entry point into the Nikon system, the D3000 ($550, street, with 18– 55mm f/3.5–5.6 VR lens)?

Entry Level, Minus The "Entry Level"

If you haven't noticed, the crew here at Gear Patrol loves to take photos . Not too long ago, this GP contributor was the last member of the crew still trying to take photos of the latest gear with his trusty old point-and-shoot (the venerable, yet aged Canon PowerShot SD200).

Nikon D3000

The Nikon D3000 is the entry level Nikon Digital SLR. It is aimed at anyone who is looking for a step up from a compact digital camera or anyone who is looking to transfer to a Digital SLR from a 35mm camera. Entry level gives the impression of a basic camera. This is not really true.

[REVIEW-NIKON D3000 DSLR]

This 10.2 megapixel camera is Nikon's new entry model, supplied with an 18–55mm (27–82 film equivalent) lens with vibration reduction. Sensor dust reduction is by sensor vibration. The medium resolution 75mm LCD doubles as the camera status screen.
Pros:
  • The images from the camera are consistently well exposed
  • Colour is generally good, except under incandescent light where auto white balance fails
  • Ergonomics are excellent and the noises – shutter and mirror slap – are amazingly refined
  • It does not feel cheap
Cons:
  • Nikon pinch the pennies on their low end models – no auto bracketing
  • a limited range of auto-focus lenses (there is no focus drive in the body)
  • poor LCD resolution and no live view.

Nikon has been raising the bar on their entry-level DSLRs. While the D3000 is intended to be their most affordable model, it is using a variation of the 10MP sensor and the same AF module on the D200, which was a $1699 prosumer model that was in very high demand merely a few years ago back in 2006.
