Nikon Coolpix AW100
With compact cameras slimming down, folding optics becoming more sophisticated and prices dropping, more and more waterproof models are appearing. Nikon's first waterproof Coolpix is the AW100.
Pros:
- Packed with features
- solid build
Cons:
- Image noise
- controls can be a little fiddly
- action button controls could be better

The Nikon Coolpix AW100 represents the company's initial offering in the rugged compact camera market. As youd expect from a camera in this category, it's waterproof to 33′, shockproof to 5′, freezeproof to 14 F, and it has built-in GPS, making it great for all of your adventures.
Pros:

Cons:
- No manual setting
- no RAW
- must master scene modes

Nikon Coolpix AW100 is good rugged choice, but not without limitations
The GPS performance in my review camera was solid and turning it on and off is easier than in most competing rugged compacts. Photo and video quality are very good if you have a lot of light and you don't need large prints or mind doing a little sharpening after you shoot.
Pros:
- The Nikon Coolpix AW100 has good rugged specifications for its price and solid GPS performance.
Cons:
- The AW100's slow lens requires more use of high ISO settings or slow shutter speeds
- Its controls feel spongy and occasionally unresponsive due to the waterproofing and the body's somewhat slippery

Not tough at all - sending it back.
You never get a second chance to make a first impression, Nikon. We have other Nikon cameras that are great, but this one flunked big-time. We will now get to have fun with Nikon's warranty/repair program.
Pros:
- Pretty good auto exposure settings, not as good as a Canon B30
- Size is good
Cons:
- Side panel fell off less than a week after we purchased the camera at the beginning of our vacation
- Metering hard to learn

Nikon Coolpix AW100 review: Nikon Coolpix AW100
The rugged Nikon Coolpix AW100 is a fine choice for shallow water or dry land adventures -- just make sure you have plenty of light. Nikon came late to the rugged compact camera party, but its first entry, the Coolpix AW100, arrived prepared to handle some fairly rough treatment. It's rated to be waterproof down to 33 feet, shockproof to 5 feet, and freezeproof to 14 degrees Fahrenheit.
Pros:
- The Nikon Coolpix AW100 has good rugged specifications for its price and solid GPS performance
- The camera is also fairly easy to use out of the box.
Cons:
- The AW100's slow lens requires more use of high ISO settings or slow shutter speeds
- Its controls feel spongy and occasionally unresponsive due to the waterproofing and the body's somewhat slippery.

Nikon Coolpix AW100 Review
When one thinks of rugged cameras, either Olympus or Panasonic are among the brands that one thinks of instantly. These brands have been launching tough, shockproof cameras for years and though a tad on the pricier side, they are extremely efficient and perform in the way they are intended to.

Nikon Coolpix AW100 review
The Nikon Coolpix AW100 is the first camera in the new Coolpix All Weather line. It's a rugged compact that's waterproof down to 10 metres for up to one hour, shockproof to a drop of 1.5 metres and freeze-proof for temperatures as low as -10C.

In the hand the AW100 feels robust - just as its specification suggests -and we found it easy to navigate through the shooting, movie and setup menus. Full HD video capture (1920x1080 @30fps) is also very quick to control, thanks to the dedicated movie-rec button directly below the zoom controls.
