Nights of Azure Review – PlayStation 4

It's not too often that you get a JRPG set in the ‘real' world, with place names that you recognize and a time period that is easily identifiable. Nights of Azure takes place in the 19 th Century, and though Ruswal Island, where it takes place, is fictional, you have many references to missions...

Positives + Fast-paced; enjoyable gameplay + Good variety of tasks and environments

Negatives; Unnecessary oversexualization of characters and their motivations; Translation issues; Bland visuals

Nights of Azure (PlayStation 4) Review

Nights of Azure is the type of game where the screenshots end up looking better than the game itself. This isn't to say the game is bad; on the whole it is decent, but weighed down by many little issues and falling short of what could have been based on the material it was working with.

Nights of Azure

As a general rule, RPGs are my favorite games to play. I like to find a game with an intriguing story, one that you keep on playing simply because you want to find out what happens next. However, it also has to have decent gameplay or I will get bored of doing the same thing over and over.

PS4 Review - 'Nights of Azure'

Nights of Azure is a tragic tale of two friends faced with impossible decisions that will test their loyalty to their quest and to each other.

Alright for fighting

An exercise in apathy, neither solid nor liquid. Not exactly bad, but not very good either. Just a bit "meh," really.

If you had bet me that Gust, developers of pretty much Atelier games, and only Atelier games, was going to try and make something outside of their wheelhouse, which has been the JRPG for many years now, I'd… have lost a fair amount of money to you.

Nights of Azure Review – A Unique JRPG That Thrives On Simplicity

Gust, the brains behind the Atelier series, returns with Nights of Azure representing a new, darker direction for Gust. While the Atelier series mostly embodies a very light-hearted, happy-go-lucky, and innocent ambience, for Gust to present a game that boasts to be darker and grittier is quite...

cooler; darker ambience; character interactions & development; accessibility/simplicity; straightforward and concise; not pressured to commit your life

not challenging enough; lack of customization/variability

I didn't expect to enjoy Nights of Azure as much as I do, especially given its frustrating habit of cheapening its female protagonists by presenting them as both serious characters and jiggly eye candy.

At the start Nights of Azure can seem promising but the more you play, the more you realize it is a tad shallow. Collecting Servans can be fun but is ultimately not really needed due to how overpowered your own character can get.
