Motorola Razr 5G review

If you can accept the tradeoffs linked to a folding design, the Razr 5G is a decent effort from Motorola. This phone has bags of style and brings many practical advantages.

Super cool; Compact when closed; Useful outer screen; Well-made;

Slippery and heavy; Some specs mediocre;

Motorola Razr (2020) review: Flip out over the 5G follow-up

The 2020 Razr might not be a device with mainstream appeal like the original from 15 years ago - plus the incoming glut of folding phone competitors is going to further challenge it - but nonetheless it's an exciting piece of technology that stands out for more of the right reasons than the wrong ones. But do you really need a folding phone? Probably not.

Second display's enhanced functionality; Smooth software experience; Battery life is surprisingly good; Iconic design that'll turn heads;

Undeniably expensive; POLED screen is reflective; Screen not perfectly flat; Fingerprint scanner still poorly placed; Do you really need a folding phone?;

Motorola Razr 5G Review

Motorola revolutionized the mobile phone industry in 2004 when it launched the Razr. Almost overnight, the sleek clamshell became a status symbol and gained a dedicated following until Apple's iPhone and a host of other smartphones hit the market. Moto brought it back briefly in the early 2010s with a line of slab-style Droid Razrs, before reuniting it with its rightful folding form factor earlier this year. While the new Razr definitely turned heads, it was met with mixed reviews (including our own) and a healthy dose of skepticism after Samsung’s problems with the Galaxy Fold. Months later, the folding phone trend shows no sign of stopping and Motorola is back with the Razr 5G ($1,399.99).  Can the Razr 5G muster up the same enthusiasm as the OG model? Possibly, though even Motorola’s Doug Michau said the form factor isn't for everyone—and until I used the new phone, I wasn't sold on it myself. But the Razr 5G is different than most of the foldables out there right now, as it do...

The Motorola Razr 5G is a stylish folding phone that improves on its predecessor in every way.

Gorgeous design; Useful exterior display; Excellent 48MP camera; Solid sub-6GHz 5G connectivity

No IP rating; Battery life could be better

Motorola Razr (2020) Review

I've been reviewing Razr phones since 2004, when they were arguably the first high-fashion handsets. Flash forward to 2020, and the new Razr is the coolest phone I've seen in years. Motorola took the Razr legacy seriously here, delivering a similarly slim, beautiful, fashionable device. But to get it so thin, and for it to be able to work without overheating, the company made too many compromises on performance. The Razr has startlingly short battery life, a poor camera, and actually makes creaking noises when you open and close it. Everything here is subordinate to the design, resulting in a phone that looks and feels like a $1,500 statement piece, but sure doesn't perform like one. A Serious Design Statement The Razr experience starts with a really cool box. The box is actually a stand, displaying the folded-open phone like a futuristic monolith. It isn't a charging stand, though, as there's no way to route a power cable through the bottom. So like most product boxes, you'll p...

Motorola's gorgeous folding Razr doesn't deliver the performance you expect from a $1,500 phone.

Slim and striking form factor; Thoughtful, elegant software; Good sound quality

Poor battery life; Weak wireless performance; Subpar camera; Hinge makes creaking noise; Very expensive
