Moto Z2 Play Review: 2 Steps Forward, 1 Big Step Back

LG may have abandoned its family of mods for the G6, and Google's Project Ara got shut down before even even reaching the public. But Motorola remains committed to modular phones, which let you swap in add-ons that deliver new features to a handset.

Superthin aluminum design; Easy-to-use modular accessories; Colorful 5.5-inch AMOLED display

Expensive for the specs; especially for unlocked version; Just average battery life; Mediocre performance

Motorola Moto Z2 Play review: thinner, lighter, better

Last year's reinvention of Motorola centered around the short-lived buzz over modular smartphones. Its Moto Z and Moto Mods platform were the most practical take on the modular phone concept, but they didn't exactly ignite the smartphone world.

Slim; light design; Excellent battery life; Smart software enhancements

Camera could use optical stabilization; Fingerprint gestures are clumsy; Only available unlocked or from Verizon

Moto Z2 Play review: Not a bad phone, but still a step backward

Motorola has yet to truly make the case that Moto Mods are a good idea. We were promised monthly mod releases, but that didn't happen. The Moto Mods we do have range from quirky and overpriced to mediocre... and overpriced.

Performance The Moto Z2 Play is optimized very well, despite the mid-range specs; Basic tasks won't cause a bit of lag, Battery life The battery life is above average, and it charges incredibly fast with Moto's premium charger, Software Motorola's version of Nougat is clean and efficient.

Battery life again While it's good compared to other phones; the Moto Z2 Play gets poorer battery life than last year's phone; Moto Mods I'm still not convinced that Moto Mods make sense; Design The same flat back and giant camera hump seen on other Z phones; thanks to the Moto Mod connector.

Lenovo introduced their family last year with high hopes of being something different. The evolution of smartphone design has been more iterative than innovate in recent years from most manufacturers.

Moto Z2 Play review

Following a pretty popular and well-loved predecessor, the Moto Z2 Play isn't trying to fix anything that ain't broken. It takes a certain level of confidence and self-awareness to go about an update the way Lenovo's Motorola division has done.

Moto Z2 Play review: All the mod cons

Modular phones are in a rather interesting spot. At the end of 2016 Google canned Project Ara , its open-source modular mobile project. In 2017, the latest LG G-series unceremoniously ditched the company's lacklustre "Friends" modules .

Incredible battery life (even more incredible with a relevant battery Mod); Mods work with minimal fuss and can be genuinely useful; great fingerprint scanner with gesture controls; flagship-level smoothness and operation - including for games

The OnePlus 5 will likely give it a run for the money; not all Mods fit perfectly and phone looks bizarre without one fitted; why buy into Mods when you could buy separate accessories for any phone

Moto Z2 Play

The Moto Z2 Play is innovative, has very long battery life and smooth UX. It's definitely worth considering.

Modular; Good camera; Long battery life

Faster performance would have been better

If you want a sleek modular smartphone running stock Android then the Moto Z2 Play is pretty much your only option. However, if you aren't interested in the Moto Mods then you can go for some other options available in the market.

Super AMOLED Display; Light; and well-designed; Good battery

Expensive Moto Mods

Motorola is on launching sphere these days. The brand has already introduced a range smartphones in India and Moto Z2 Play is one of them. The device comes with a price tag of Rs 27,999 and is all set to take on the likes of Samsung and OnePlus, which has dominated this price segment.

Sleek design; Clean user interface; Impressive battery life

Camera could have been better; Shimmers a bit in high-graphic games; Dual-SIM functionality is buggy

Last year Motorola launched two modular flagships, the Moto Z and Moto Z Play. The former was a premium high-end device, and the later was a functional low-cost variant meant for anyone willing to experience modular convenience without spending a high-end price.
