This perfectly competent open-world game gets a heck of a lot more interesting when it throws an endless host of savage, dynamic AI enemies into the mix.

I was a bit of a prick when I played Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor . You see, I loved trolling uruks and orcs more than anything. Now and then I'd sneak into their strongholds to shoot the doors off of their cages and let loose imprisoned caragors, cat-like beasts that were not previously part of...

As far as licensed games go, most of them aren't even worth mentioning. But there are some rare cases that fire on every cylinder and live up to their parent franchises. And once in a blue moon, you might get a video game that surpasses the quality of the film it's based on.

With stealth, platforming and similar assets and animations, Monolith's Lord of the Rings title Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor has more than a little Assassin's Creed flavour to it. Its counter and combo focused fighting also echoes the free flowing combat of the Batman: Arkham games.

The realism in this game is so amazing. You are totally immersed in the game world that you really feel apart of it. The movement and gameplay is fluid and the cut screens are breathtaking.

Shadow of Mordor is the best Lord of the Rings game for nearly a decade, though considering the competition, that isn't really saying much. More importantly, it's a whole lot better than you might expect.

Mordor isn't known for scenic beauty; Getting overwhelmed can be frustrating

The closest we've come to a proper crack at the Middle-earth license in recent years was 2011's War In The North. Though serviceable enough and chock full of content, Snowblind's action RPG fell short in too many areas despite its apparent ambition.
