Microsoft Surface Laptop Go 12" Intel i5-1035G1 8GB RAM 128GB SSD - Platinum THH-00016 review

Solidly built and great looking; with a fast enough processor.

The display's resolution is wonky; and boy does it get hot.

Microsoft Surface Laptop Go Review

Microsoft’s Surface lineup, long a showcase for the most advanced hardware design ideas in the Windows ecosystem, now welcomes a $549.99 laptop for the rest of us. With streamlined component configurations and the omission of some of the more futuristic Surface Laptop 3 features, the new Surface Laptop Go will appeal to price-sensitive buyers who need a sensible workhorse laptop for light computing tasks. The $699 configuration reviewed here is the best one for most people. It takes the laptop out of the “cheap” range and isn't quite as impressive on raw performance as similarly priced competitors with AMD Ryzen processors, but it’s still a fine value for what it offers. A Sturdy, Svelte Surface First, a word about the Surface Laptop Go name, and where this laptop fits into the grand, confusing scheme of Microsoft's Surface line. The Surface Laptop Go is a new flavor of Surface. It's not to be confused with the Surface Go (Microsoft's budget-minded detachable 2-in-1, now on the S...

Although it's missing some nifty features from the pricier Surface Laptop 3, the Surface Laptop Go is what many people are looking for right now: a well-designed, lightweight laptop with adequate performance that won't break the bank.

Inexpensive; Light weight; Comfortable keyboard and touch pad; Multiple color options; Attractive styling and excellent build quality; USB Type-A port

Less-than-1080p display; No face recognition camera or keyboard backlighting; Internal storage tops out at 256GB; Middling audio quality

Microsoft Surface Laptop Go 12" Intel i5-1035G1 8GB RAM 128GB SSD - Platinum THH-00016 review

The Surface Laptop Go looks like a Surface, but it doesn't impress like some of its bigger brothers. I love the Surface Laptop Go as the sleek mid-range laptop that it almost is. You can get its great keyboard, elegant chassis and decent performance at a respectable price — if you choose the $699...

Elegant aluminum lid and deck, Thin bezels and 3:2 display, Wonderful typing experience, Both USB-C and USB-A ports

Highly disappointing battery life, Display could be brighter, Gets a little warm

Microsoft Surface Laptop Go 12" Intel i5-1035G1 8GB RAM 128GB SSD - Platinum THH-00016 review

Microsoft’s Surface Laptop 3 is well-regarded for its high-quality hardware in a good looking package. But at a starting price of $1,000, it’s relatively expensive. The new Surface Laptop Go aims to solve that problem, thanks to its affordable starting price of $549.

Microsoft Surface Laptop Go 12" Intel i5-1035G1 8GB RAM 128GB SSD - Platinum THH-00016 review

The Microsoft Surface Go is supposed to be an entry-level Surface 2-in-1. After a few weeks with it, I feel some Surface lovers should consider it over the Pro and maybe the Surface Laptop 2.

Good display; Light and Portable; Decent Battery Life; USB-C Charging Port

Bezels are slightly TOO big; Accessories sold separately; Not comfortable to use on lap

Microsoft Surface Laptop Go 12" Intel i5-1035G1 8GB RAM 128GB SSD - Sandstone THH-00041 review

The Surface Go sits in a somewhat interesting segment of the market. The base model has a price that’s low enough to be considered a value proposition, but like all value devices, there’s compromise to get there.

Microsoft Surface Laptop Go 12" Intel i5-1035G1 8GB RAM 128GB SSD - Sandstone THH-00041 review

The Surface Go is an interesting gadget. It's a better work device than the iPad Pro but can't beat it as pure tablet experience.

Well built hardware, gorgeous display, flexible hybrid use.

It's not exactly powerful, Type Cover is a still a costly extra, USB-C port lacks Thunderbolt 3, battery life leaves much to be desired, thick bezels date the design

The Surface Go is not without its issues, but slap on a keyboard and it’s a genuine gamechanger

Microsoft Surface Laptop Go 12" Intel i5-1035G1 8GB RAM 128GB SSD - Sandstone THH-00041 review

The new Microsoft Surface Go is the perfect size for casual coffee-shop computing, but getting the full experience quickly drives up the price.

The Surface Go delivers Microsoft's great Surface design and accessories at a lower price and in a smaller size.

The Pentium processor isn't suited for all tasks. A keyboard cover is a must-have add-on but still sold separately. And you'll probably want to pay extra for more storage and RAM, too. Battery life is lacking for a go-anywhere PC.

Microsoft Surface Laptop Go 12" Intel i5-1035G1 8GB RAM 128GB SSD - Sandstone THH-00041 review

The Microsoft Surface Go is an attractive computer with a great display. This sets the standard for affordable 2-in-1s, but it should have come with a keyboard.

Attractive with strong build quality, Bright, vivid display, Affordable starting price

Short battery life, Doesn’t come with keyboard
