Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain review

Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain is not just a high watermark for the series. It is the greatest ever stealth game by a distance, a true masterclass from a designer and team who bow out at the very peak of their creative powers.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain Review

In all honesty, by throwing out a lot of "the old way" of making a Metal Gear Solid game, Kojima productions have produced the best stealth game I've ever played and the high point of a series dotted with gems. Metal Gear Solid's swansong is a masterpiece.

PS4/Xbox One Review: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is the perfect send off for the series, even if it does leave me sad and wanting more. It ties things up in a way I wasn't expecting and serves as a farewell to both Snake and Big Boss himself, Hideo Kojima.

Tactical espionage brilliance - Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain review

It's 0200. Clouds move overhead in the distance, slowly closing in. It's dark, but it will be light soon. I lay prone in the muddy sludge of an African wetland, as enemy forces pace slowly just a hair's length above on planks spanning the ankle-high water.

Emergent gameplay second-to-none; Mother Base building is intricate and addicting; Excellent; if somewhat flawed; characters; Gorgeous visuals and solid framerates; Tapes and music flesh out the universe incredibly

Story sometimes falls short of expectations; The Skulls

A Legend Worth Waiting For

Metal Gear is a member of video gaming's old guard. It has been consistently popular since its inception in the ‘80s, which is a rare distinction it shares with revered names like Mario and Zelda.

Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain

Metal Gear fans have been waiting for this a long time, and now Snake is finally back to kick more ass. When I played Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of Patriots on PlayStation 3, I remember thinking how it would've been cool if the mission areas were a bit more open.

Pays proper homage Snake and to the franchise; awesome atmosphere; great soundtrack and superb voice acting; interesting characters; extraordinarily intelligent AI behavior; unpredictable mission structure; a lot of content to keep you hooked for days

The GUI will take some getting used to; the open world feels a bit empty most of the time and you might be returning to the same spots more than youd like to (especially during side-ops)

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain review – the ultimate sneaking mission

Years of development, and controversy, are over and the new Metal Gear Solid is finally out. But how can it possibly live up to the hype?

Excellent stealth and action, and non-linear progression; Mother Base works great, and the range of different missions, soldiers, and weapons is staggering; Superb graphics

The script still isn't great, even if it's a lot more economical than usual; Some pacing issues towards the end and the FOB element leaves a bad taste in the mouth
