Huawei P9 Plus review: The big and the bold

Huawei is fast emerging as one of the most popular smartphone brands in the world. A lot of that notability is thanks to its budget sub-brand, Honor, which cranks out affordable but high quality phones.

Fantastic battery life; fluid and fast performance; quick charging support shaves considerable plug-in time; decent camera system

Some parts of software still counter-intuitive; metal casing is shiny and slippery; huge fingerprint magnet

Last month, we gave you our thoughts on the much-raved-about Huawei P9 , which you really can't speak about without shining the spotlight on its dual Leica cameras. Long story short, we came to the conclusion that the P9 is an exceedingly good camera smartphone – and a relatively affordable one at...

Large and vibrant 5.5-inch Super AMOLED display; Very impressive performance; Dual Leica cameras are great for capturing black-and-white photos; Long-lasting battery life

Fingerprints often stick to the back; Tends to get warm after extended periods of use

Huawei P9 Plus Smartphone Review

The Huawei P9 Plus is not just a bigger version of the standard P9 . The manufacturer not only equips the Plus model with a bigger screen and a larger battery but also implements several additional features and even uses a completely different display technology.

fast SoC; expandable storage; wide range of frequencies; good cameras; voice quality; provided headset; quick-charge; USB Type-C; very good battery runtimes; Press Touch; Infrared; cover included; 3-year warranty; good speakers

only USB 2.0, only LTE Cat; 6, neither MHL nor SlimPort, slight SoC throttling under sustained load, no 4K video recordings, no FM radio, expensive

If you are looking for a flagship smartphone, at the moment there are a few suggestions: Apple iPhone 6S Plus, Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, HTC 10, LG G5 and Huawei P9 Plus. When people ask me what the top-end smartphone to buy, I say – Galaxy S7. Why

Huawei P9 Plus review: Bigger, with more RAM and storage, and better speakers

Huawei has gone to town with its new P9 handset family, releasing it in 'regular', Plus and Lite versions. We liked the 5.2-inch P9 when we reviewed it, and in many respects the 5.5-inch P9 Plus is the same handset writ large.

Slimline aluminium unibody construction; Dual-lens main camera delivers high-quality composite images; Press Touch screen functionality; Flexible and responsive fingerprint scanner; Stereo speakers; Good battery life

Screen resolution is lower than other flagship handsets; Huawei Emotion UI may not appeal to everyone

Huawei P9 Plus Review: Two Cameras Are Better Than One

At the end of the day the P9 Plus is another really solid flagship offering from Huawei. Does it have the best camera in a phone today? Probably. Is it the best flagship in the market right now?

Huawei P9 Plus review: high-class phablet held back by sub-par software

Chinese firm's super-sized flagship is great, with fun camera, excellent selfies, snappy performance and solid battery life - it's just a shame about the customised Android

Good-looking; feels great; excellent selfie camera; great dual rear camera; brilliant fingerprint scanner; decent battery life; USB-C; IR blaster; microSD card support

EMUI isn't quite up to scratch; screen not good for VR (low resolution); Press touch a bit of a gimmick; exclusive to Vodafone in the UK; battery not removable

If you want the definite article the Huawei P9 Plus is the way to go, but there's a premium for the bigger screen, more storage and RAM, larger battery, speaker upgrade, Press Touch and improved selfie camera.

Huawei P9 Plus review

The Huawei P9 Plus is a top-end phone. It's bold, it's pricey and out to offer features the company couldn't even fit in the normal Huawei P9 , already an expensive device. A pressure-sensitive Press Touch screen is at the top of the list, along with an ultra-flashy metal finish.
