HP Envy 17 Leap Motion SE Notebook: Australian Review
What happens when you take a desktop replacement laptop and add in Leap Motion's fingertip-tracking, movement-control system? You get the special edition HP Envy 17. You can control this laptop without even touching it . But is an otherwise pretty basic consumer notebook worth $2499?

Decent for everyday use
Windows 8 ruined this laptop, I have seen earlier versions of this laptop that ran windows 7 and they were awesome, they were the reason I wanted to get this laptop, but Microsoft decided to ruin it with Windows 8 and since it is mostly an OS for tablets so many software changes had to be made that- This is a laptop for everyday consumers
- this is for someone who does not know much about computers
- I got this laptop a few months ago and right out of the box I noticed how big it was, defiantly not an easy to carry laptop and it weighs a fair amount too so keep that in mind
- Also I was extremely disappointed with Windows 8, it eats up CPU and ram like crazy and all the background processes that...
HP's Envy 17 is a desktop replacement with plenty of speed under the hood, uses fourth-gen Core i7
Our first glimpse of a fourth-generation Intel Core i7-equipped notebook comes in the form of HP's very large Envy 17. It's designed to be a stay-at-home computer, and it's powerful enough to replace a desktop for most tasks.- Fast CPU
- Lots of RAM
- Plenty of internal storage
- Bouncy keyboard
- Only single-band Wi-Fi
- No touchscreen
Envy 17 3D
The HP Envy 17 3D is a powerful multimedia and gaming machine that serves well as a desktop replacement laptop for the home. Its 3D effects are good both in games and movies, but you are limited to just one person at a time as it only comes with a pair of glasses.- : Great Âperformance for multitasking and gaming
- great 3D effects
- full HD Âdisplay
- bundled active-shutter 3D glasses
- terrific sound quality
- : Bulky and heavy
- poor battery life
- cumbersome 3D setup process
- notebook runs very hot

HP Envy 17 Leap Motion SE
The HP Envy 17 is a high-class desktop replacement with a trick up its sleeve – or, more accurately, in its wrist-rest. It's the first laptop we've seen with Leap Motion, which means games and apps can be controlled with mid-air gestures. In every other department the Envy 17 fits the bill.- Fast and good for games
- Bright
- high-contrast
- Full HD screen
- Good keyboard with numberpad
- Smart design
- Terrible Leap Motion controls
- Overheating internals
- Poor trackpad buttons
- Mediocre battery life
- Poor screen colour accuracy
Overall I am happy with this product with the exception of how freaking hot and loud it is even under small to no load enough to burn your lap. It will also overheat sometimes when rendering or working in Adobe Creative Suite apps even when resting flat on a table (have to prop it up).
HP Envy 17
With the 17-inch category proving to be surprisingly popular, the Envy 17 has a couple of flaws that prevent it from being one of the best. The reliance upon mechanical drives in our sample definitely slowed down system responsiveness in day-to-day use, while the budget GPU barely coped with games.- Solid CPU performance
- Large amount of storage
- Attractive display
- Woeful game performance
- Huge and heavy
The HP 17 1190 is worth its weight in gold.
I needed a laptop was powerful, stable and had a good screen; the HP 17-1190 delivers on all these things. The Good -- - Incredibly powerful, having Photoshop, Google Chrome, Itunes and Skype open at the same time makes no dent in the performance. - The quality of the screen and graphics is superb.
