HP Elitebook x360 1040 G5 (i7-8650U, FHD) Convertible Review

The EliteBook x360 1040 G5 is everything we love about the EliteBook x360 1030 G3 but with a roomier 14-inch display. It can be best described as a Spectre x360 13 on overdrive in terms of features and security.

surfaces excellent at deterring fingerprints; excellent trackpad responsiveness; extensive security features; very bright display options; dual Thunderbolt 3 ports; 4G LTE and NFC optional; crisp keyboard feedback; loud internal speakers; 120 Hz panel options; very long battery life; USB Type-C...

disappointing Core i7 performance; weak CPU Turbo Boost, slow display response times; noticeable ghosting, weak GPU performance; no discrete graphics, matte anti-glare option is very grainy, HP Active Pen stylus sold separately, top display bezel is relatively thick, non-upgradeable RAM; soldered,...

HP Elitebook x360 1040 G5

The 14-inch Elitebook x360 excels and fall short in most ways that the 13-inch device did. It has many things going for it: a sturdy design (and in this case, one not marred by the inclusion of a larger display), optional LTE, solid performance, and good battery life.

Relatively compact design; even with its 14-inch display; Etched-glass anti-glare screen option is a nice touch; Two USB-A ports in addition to two Thunderbolt 3 ports; Good performance; Good battery life

No microSD card slot; Bad location for page navigation keys; Active Pen costs more; No webcam shutter; Gets quite expensive as you spec it out

HP EliteBook x360 1040 G5 2-in-1 convertible business laptop

This is the first time that HP has introduced a truly top-of-the-range convertible business laptop in a 14-inch form factor. The x360 1040 G5 still carries the DNA of the EliteBook brand but has evolved into something that is decidedly different from the rest of the business laptops at the very...

Nifty design and stylus; Great performance; Blisteringly fast SSD; Plenty of ports

Battery life disappointing; Expensive; Uneven anti-glare display; Loud under load

So far so good

Just received this. Arrived much quicker than it was supposed to. Very happy about that. Super slim and lightweight. Everything set up well. So far, I am very happy with this.

HP EliteBook x360 1040 G5

If you're buying a 2-in-1 convertible for consumer use, however, neither EliteBook is a good choice. For those after spiffy designs with no budget constraints, the leather-clad HP Spectre Folio is an intriguing option.

Comfortable keyboard; Unique anti-glare display; Fast charging; Long battery life; Very thin and light; Multiple customization options, including Intel vPro support; Thunderbolt 3 port

Frequent fan noise; Expensive as configured

HP EliteBook x360 1040 G5 review: Versatile but lacking distinction

If you're looking for a privacy-focused machine with bountiful versatility, look no further. The performance isn't market-leading and neither is the battery life, but it does everything to a good standard. It's the classic ‘jack of all trades, master of none'.

Impressive privacy features; Anti-glare screen coating works wonders; brilliant build quality; Responsive touchscreen/stylus combo

Display is poor indoors; Performance and battery could be better
