The Grand Theft Auto series has always been just as controversial as it has been innovative. Rockstar makes a habit out of crossing red lines in regards to both subject matter and technical limitations, and we've always sat and wondered just how far they would go with their legendary series.

For all the controversy surrounding its violence, sexuality, and vindictive portrayal of American culture, it's ironic that the Grand Theft Auto series is one of the most mature and thought provoking in gaming.

Expectations are always a tricky thing to manage. Grand Theft Auto V has launched after months of rabid anticipation from gamers, in the wake of critical acclaim from reviewers, and was quickly followed by pronouncements that it had smashed every record for the biggest launch event in any media.

Set in the sprawling city of Los Santos and the surrounding area, Grand Theft Auto V delivers a world of unprecedented scale and detail bursting with life, from mountaintops to the depths of the ocean.

Even with everything I've covered here, there is still plenty worth talking about. If you ignore every optional piece of content thrown your way and focus entirely on the main story, you're still looking at an expertly-designed game with plenty to keep you busy.

Don't let the missing half-point fool you, Grand Theft Auto V is as good of a retail release you'll find this generation and an excellent coda to this generation for Rockstar. GTA Online and the expected DLC may well fix the few issues I have.

Indeed, Grand Theft Auto V is a stunning triumph in just about everything it attempts. Marrying gameplay brilliance to compelling characters and a world matched only in size by the number of things you can do in it, Rockstar's magnum opus gives this console generation the send-off it deserves.
