A top-to-bottom revamp of the whole God Of War franchise that matches thrilling, if slightly shallow, combat and exploration with some impressively trenchant storytelling.

The new visual style and combat work extremely well, with an interesting and secret-filled game world. Excellent storytelling and great use of Kratos’ character. Stunning graphics.

The combat is highly enjoyable but relatively simplistic, at least on normal difficulty. Slightly uninspired enemy designs and repetitive puzzles.

I found myself thrown when I started playing God of War , the rebirth of Sony Santa Monica’s Greek God game…where did I recognise the voice was that coming from Kratos’ mouth? It was Teal’c from Stargate SG-1!

God of War is the best game of this generation without a doubt. It takes a big risk and mixes up its past formula for something fresh that works and makes me wish the previous games played like this, it also has the best story and cinematic experience I’ve seen in a game.

Overall, I feel as though God of War breathes new life into the franchise and while I don't view it as a defining masterpiece in the action-adventure genre; it provides a memorable experience and strengthens the series as a whole.

It’s hard to imagine a God of War fan not enjoying this, for all the reasons that we DID mention and some that we’re holding back for the sake of spoilers. Eventhough it has seen considerable changes from previous games in the series, they almost all feel like they were for the better.

Rare is the game that's confident: uncompromising in its identity, unyielding in its cohesion and sense of self. Rarer still is the game that stays genuine and true while being so informed by its contemporaries.

This is a skull-smashing story about making mistakes and taking responsibility. While hacking and slashing their enemies, a father and son build bonds of love and loyalty. God of War is a minor masterpiece.
