Gears of War blends the best of tactical action games with the best of survival horror titles, thrusting gamers into the harrowing story of humankind's battle for survival against the Locust Horde.

'Gears 4' gives me the same sense of wonder and excitement playing through the campaign as I first had with Marcus and Dom a decade ago. It is a 'Gears' for a new generation, and The Coalition has risen to the occasion to give a top notch package with heaps of production and replay value both.

One of the biggest challenges in game development is attempting to resurrect a beloved series with a brand new team. 343 Industries had to do with with Halo 4 but succeeded (even if Halo 5 wasn't so brilliant). But now it's The Coalition's turn with Gears of War 4 .

Impressive effort with a few noticeable problems holding it back. Won't astound everyone, but is worth most people's time and cash.

With the beginning of a new saga comes some new characters and enemies but the same fun that has made the franchise so popular.

Upon starting the campaign of Gears of War 4 , I was a little worried. Here I was starting a new adventure in one of my favourite gaming series in somewhat unfamiliar territory. No longer did we have the bromance duo of Marcus Phoenix and Dominic Santiago, and the enemy was no longer the Locust.

There is something special about Gears of War . Or at least there used to be. Past the second game it feels like the wider gaming world has lost interest, and so we felt it was good that the franchise was given a rest after Judgment.

I only got into the original Gears of War back in 2008 and since then I've pretty much played all flavours, including the Ultimate Edition remastered version. So it was a dead cert that at some point I would grab a copy of the latest outing.

I was also hoping for a bit more of that old school Epic swagger, that element of unabashed stupidity which gave the world Lancers and a level set inside a Riftworm.
