This product is a great new one from Garmin because it floats and does not cost an arm and leg. If you want a basic unit without altimeter and compass, this is a good choice (I didn't need compass, but did need floatability and water proof).

This hand-held unit from Garmin is pre-loaded with a whole range of coastal charts and comes with a three-axis compass for charting your precise direction, barometric altimeter, full-color 2.6-inch screen and micro SD card slot for loading external charts and maps.

I use a GPS when kayaking and I replaced a older model Garmin GPS with the GPSMAP78. The main advantages I find is that this model is waterproof and floats if dropped overboard. The setup is straight forward and the menu is easy enough to access via the keys, which I prefer over a touch screen.

This product did not suit us because we bought it under the mistaken idea that it contained maps of the Canadian West Coast. It only has marine maps of the US and Bahamas.

things this day and age should not require a 2 week class to learn how to use. I have messed with this thing for a few hrs now. I have learned that the longer I mess with it the more I hate it. im going to give it another couple of tries...if I cant figure it out its going back to amazon.
