Fujifilm X20 review: It's all about the experience

The Fujifiilm X20 is a great choice for people looking for a well-designed photographer's camera, but the basic feature set and disappointing video might not be for everyone. Fujifilm's X20 advanced compact gets to play in the same sandbox as the company's higher-end cameras, thanks to the incorporation of the X-Trans sensor technology that originally debuted in Fujifilm's interchangeable-lens models. To fit into the camera body -- and price segment -- this replacement for the X10 incorporates a new 2/3-inch version of the sensor, albeit at the same 12-megapixel resolution.
Pros:
  • A new sensor lets the Fujifilm X20 deliver better photo quality than its predecessor
  • and tweaks to the design improve the shooting experience significantly.
Cons:
  • The lens-twist-to-turn-on is getting old fast, and the feature set provides just the basics
  • Plus the video quality disappoints.

Fujifilm X20 Review

The Fujifilm X20 is a true enthusiast's compact, with solid build quality, a fast lens, unique optical viewfinder, and sharp, high resolution photos. It offers a wide selection of manual controls, easily adjustable settings (thanks to twin control dials, the Fn button, and Quick Menu), and 1080/60p video recording. Downsides include a mediocre, hard-to-access movie mode and sub-par battery life.
Pros:
  • Enthusiasts and low light shooters who want a compact camera with high-end build quality and features.
Cons:
  • Users who want to get a full day of shooting out of one battery. Movie enthusiasts.

The Fujifilm X20 takes what made the X10 that came before it a hit - namely its well-built, retro-styled body, fast lens, and full suite of manual controls - and adds an improved sensor and AF system.
Pros:
  • Very good photo quality
  • noticeably sharper than X10, Fast, 28-112mm equiv. F2.0-2.8 zoom lens with manual zoom ring, Solid build quality with retro design, Large optical viewfinder offers exposure data and focus point overlay, Wide selection of manual controls (plus a scene-selecting auto mode for...
Cons:
  • Tends to smudge fine details (even at ISO 100, Clips highlights at default DR setting (though no worse than its peers, Optical viewfinder doesn't live up to its potential (no composition grid, grid lines)
  • lens can be seen through viewfinder at wide-angle, No dedicated movie record button
  • no manual...

Fujifilm FinePix X20

The X20 boasts to be a lot more than its predecessor claimed to be, packing a brand spankin' new BSI sensor and image processor. It addressed the many shortcomings the previous model had, including making that optical viewfinder useful by putting a digital information overlay in there.
Pros:
  • Sharp images thanks to no optical low pass filter
  • Fast f/2.0-2.8 lens
  • Speedy and accurate AF
  • Short startup times
Cons:
  • ISO 3200 and higher images are not so great at handling noise
  • Movie mode has no manual control
  • Audio recording barely average

The beautifully styled, well-built X20 is a fantastic camera, but we felt like it hit the "in between" area. The styling, while attractive, sometimes got in the way of functionality, but the image quality and low light performance left us happy to put up with the nuances.
Pros:
  • Good in low light
  • intuitive functionality
  • classy styling
Cons:
  • Good in low light
  • intuitive functionality
  • classy styling

Underexposes outdoor photo`s

I loved the form of the camera, how you turn it on via the lens, indoor photo`s are great, but for some reason outdoor photo`s are very underexposed even in full auto, and when you brighten them up in Photoshop you introduce a lot of picture noise, and i was on the latest firmware.
