Fighter Within? We'd be better Without.

In the seventh console generation we saw an increased focus on motion controls, but the hardware just wasn't capable of the 1:1 translation from movement to screen that gamers would expect, and many games required.

Wonder if Kinect 2.0's new tech is sharp enough to register when you flip it the bird? You'll have ample room to figure that out with Fighter Within, a shallow fighter that's more infuriating than fun to play.

Fighter Within Review: A flailed attempt

Fighter Within really showcases the larger problem with Kinect only games: they just don't work. Ryse: Son of Rome and Crimson Dragon have seemingly avoided this fate, while games like Just Dance and Dance Central are of course the exception to the rule.

It's impossible to look cool playing Fighter Within. I'm not talking about a high standard of cool either, like the Fonz banging on a jukebox. No, while playing Fighters Within, you will look less cool than some pantless schlub who barely resembles a functional member of society.

Fighter Within could have had potential, if more work had gone into the gesture recognition and making the Kinect actions translate into the game world, but as it stands it feels like a lazy game that's been rushed out to hit the Xbox One's launch date.

There are so many things wrong with Fighter Within it's impossible to keep count. The first thing you notice is the gesture recognition. Kinect struggles to comprehend the most basic of hand movements.

Fighter Within review

Fighter Within is everything that is wrong with Kinect games. It applies a horrible story, broken controls and an infuriatingly unresponsive menu to a fun idea. Nothing in Fighter Within works well, and much of it doesn't work at all.

Fighter Within review – Kinect?'em-up

A bad game and a very poor start for next generation Kinect games, even if there is still some small cause for optimism beneath the bland fighting action.

Most of the simpler controls do work quite reliably; The graphics are technically decent, even if the art style is offensively bland

A terrible fighting game, with not an ounce of originality and horribly uninteresting characters and specials; More advanced moves either don't work or are barely interactive

If Ubisoft's latest is in any way indicative of the fighter within most of us, then whatever you do, please don't let them out. As may have been obvious already, this Kinect and Xbox One-exclusive fighting game is everything you'd expect it to be and less.
